What are the ingredients? Is it paraben free?

First, I might say this is an excellent emollient, having used it for more than 10 years - my rock-climbing friends swear by it -  AND I eat organic food, avoid as many additives as I can, minimize my sun exposure, etc., however I have continued using this product because levels are very low (as in many cosmetics) and  I have no evidence of cancer/estrogenic changes, skin lesions and so on. Benefits outweigh risks for me.Nevertheless, Ingredients are water, mineral oil, cetearyl alcohol, glycol stearate, stearic acid, glycerin, propylene glycol, sorbitol, lanolin, aloe barbadensis, retinol palmitate (Vita A), tocopherol acetate (Vita E), ergocalciferol (Vita D2), methylparaben, sodium hydroxide, propylparaben.Re: PARABENS - Use: Antimicrobial/antifungal, preservative in cosmetics. Safety: some say yes many say no - essentially the jury is out...The questions revolve around the the MILD estrogenic effect of products with parabens. FDA website: (a 1998 study (Routledge et al., in Toxicology and Applied Pharmacology) found that the most potent paraben tested in the study, butylparaben, showed from 10,000- to 100,000-fold less activity than naturally occurring estradiol (a form of estrogen). Further, parabens are used at very low levels in cosmetics. In a review of the estrogenic activity of parabens, (Golden et al., in Critical Reviews in Toxicology, 2005) the author concluded that based on maximum daily exposure estimates, it was implausible that parabens could increase the risk associated with exposure to estrogenic chemicals). Not enough studies to confirm a problem, other than many products contain paragons because they stop growth of potentially irritating/possibly disease causing organisms. Bottom line, yes it contains paragons.  BTW, ingredients are listed at the bottom of the page on Amazon...  Hope this helps.  DJM

Is this supposed to smell like horse manure? I opened the jar and the smell is overwhelming, couldn't use it.

Accepted Answer

The Original Udder Balm jar says "Unscented" and also "Fragrance Free". I use it every night and don't notice a smell. There's another Udder Balm product by "The Happy Cow" that is scented - smells like lemon to me. I prefer the unscented one.

Does the 16oz pump jar lid fit the 64oz jar?

NO.  The 16 oz pump lid only fits on our 16oz jars.

How can this product be 100% cruelty-free when it contains lanolin?

Accepted Answer

Lanolin oil is extracted by putting sheep's wool through a centrifuge machine that separates the oil from other chemicals and debris. The process is performed after the sheep is sheared so the extraction of lanolin causes no harm to sheep. You may already be using products that contain lanolin oil without realizing it.
