British Redcoat vs French Fusilier: North America 1755–63 (Combat, 17)

The struggle for control of North American embodied in the French and Indian War came to a head in 1759-1760. A series of confrontations matched British Redcoats against their French Fusilier counterparts, each aided by locally recruited troops and Indian allies. Author Stuart Reid has chosen three battles to illustrate the experience of combat.This Osprey Combat Series book opens with a quick introduction to the French and Indian War, followed by a brief discussion of the French and British armies in North America, and their training and tactics. A chapter each is devoted to the battle of La Belle-Famille, near Fort Niagara; the iconic fight on the Plains of Abraham outside the walls of Quebec; and the Battle of Sainte-Foy, also outside Quebec. The brisk but informative narrative is accompanied by some excellent modern and period illustrations of the respective uniforms, battle diagrams, and photographs. For all the emphasis on adaptation to the environment found in North America, it is interesting to this reviewer to note that conventional European tactics seems to have decided the day in each of the cited battles. Well recommended.

Excellent details provided on uniforms, equipment, tactics, etc. both the French and British soldiers. Please be advised that the author is only interested in the so-called 'French and Indian War' phases of the Seven Years' War.

Not much new here. A repeat of past osprey books, but slightly different perspective. Art work is good as always with this series.

Das Heft der Combat-Reihe im Osprey-Universum vergleicht die britische und die französische Armee im 7 Jährigen Krieg, in den USA als "French Indian War" bekannt. Neben Unifromen, Bewaffnung und Taktiken werden auch 3 Schlachten genauer geschildert (La Belle-Famille 24.7.1759, Plains of Abraham 13.9.1759 und Sainte-Foy 28.04.1760).Man gewinnt eine gute Übersicht, und wenn auch die Verhältnisse in Nordamerika anders waren als in Westeuropa, so kann man auch aus dem Heft einiges an Informationen ziehen für den europäischen Schauplatz.
