It is Very Hit and Miss Not recommended Do Not Buy
Sometimes it takes many, and I mean MANY, tries to get it going, so frustrating. Hard to get it to latch on in the right place and got worse over time. Got to the point of never expecting it to work. Stressful in the extreme. Customer service kindly refunded my money. It is now headed for the garbage. Can I count the different ways it does not work? Drops cans. Tips over. Stops and starts so you get a new puncture site with every try, ending up with a half opened can. And standing in the kitchen, needing to feed the poor cat, looking for my eyeglasses, again, in case that could help me to see where it should latch on ... Nope NOT happening. Off to buy whatever does work, with the refund. I really wish I had read these reviews, before purchasing, as there is another opener that works in a completely different way, which looks hopeful, so I will try that one. Live and learn, I guess!

I would not recommend
This is the worst electric can opener that I have ever used. Every time its a battle to get the can in the right magic spot where it will actually puncture and run the mechanism. There are a thousand ways you can put the can up to the blade and have it not fit, or fit but not activate. The first time I used it, it was a struggle. the second time a breeze, since then, hit and miss. I would return it, but I don't have the time or packaging. Interestingly, I found the same can opener today in a pile of junk at our local thrift store, minus the detachable part. Perhaps someone else found it hard to use too.

great can opener! works with ease even on heavy cans
Hamilton Beach Automatic Can Opener, Electric, with Easy-Clean Detachable Cutting Lever, Knife Sharpener, Cord Storage, Brushed Stainless Steel (76700)I had manual can openers for most of my life and i tried the type of small battery powered electric openers that just clamp the can and "crawl" around the can -- but that broke within 1 year (after buying those openers 2x). I decided to buy a hefty tabletop one that is plug in this time.I will say this right up front: in my opinion, if you are able, you should just use a manual can opener. The only reason why i buy electric one is because i have folks in my house that find it difficult to clamp manual openers and twist and i'm not around to always help open cans. It is just yet another appliance you have to store and bring out or keep on countertop permanently. IF you c an help it, i recommend sticking to a manual opener. As for this Hamilton Beach opener? It is built well, and actually looks nice with the SS facia. Has a bit of heft weight to it which allows the opener to hold up a very heavy can (such as the one in my video) without tipping over. The usage is very simple: just clamp it down , and press the lever and you dont really need to hold the can while its turning. See video of full operation. There is a magnet to catch the lid after as with most electric openers as expected. Functionally it works great. I have no issues. Zero effort opener.I cannot comment on longevity yet because i've only had it for a few days. But it does look like it is built to last. It should basically last forever in my opinion. I would report back if it breaks within a year which is not acceptable. In terms of cleaning, the handle does come apart to expose the blade/cog. So if you do get the parts dirty , its easy to pull off the handle and just hand clean with a rag. That's something unique about this opener and i actually appreciate that it can be removed to aid cleaning. One last thing, it has this small "knife sharpener" on the back. It's just manual sharpener. You run your blade thru it like a fine honing stone. Nice to have but a dedicated sharpener is obviously better.

Buyers regret
I awarded this appliance a 1 star, only because that was the lowest that I could rate it. From day one, it was difficult to engage the can/cutter to work. It totally refuses to open a 540 ml can. Today, while trying to open yet another 540 ml can, I noticed that the magnet was moving a bit. It was broken! The 10th or 12th time that I tried to use this piece of junk - it fell apart! I threw it in disgust into the garbage (where it belongs). Wished that I'd spent a bit more for something of quality. Far from happy with my poor decision to buy this.

Difficult To Use
I rarely give less than 4 stars when asked to review an item.Conceptually, this is a good can opener. All the components are there EXCEPT the component that lines up the can and holds it in place while the initial piercing of the can takes place. I like to think of myself as a pretty good handy-man/retired cabinet/furniture maker, but this thing had me "all thumbs"; only once out of a dozen or so cans was I able to get it to work without destroying the can and spilling its contents.A second thing about this can opener that I wasn't pleased with was that it says there is a knife sharpener built-in. It is more like a tiny "pair" of honing stones where you draw the knife through a few times to enhance the knifes sharpness - as you might use a chef's steel to keep an edge. The stones don't move, it's not a powered grinding knife sharpener - more than a bit misleading. In conclusion, the leaver is quite short and the piercing blade is not positioned well so it will require two strong hands and a fair amount of agility to operate this thing - In my view, not worth the effort or the price.
