Has anyone tried this with red squirrels? Or had any luck with any other kind of trap? Thanks.

The M144 is too weak. Try the Victor M201 trap. Designed for rats, but has the old style wood base and a stronger spring. Do my free and easy bottle cap mod, and it should work great for those pesky little red squirrels. Google "victor m201 mod" and read the comments on top response.

Are these black m144 traps the same as the beige? They arent on victors websight and all Q&A refers to beige.

We apologize for any confusion! The M144 model traps are the beige Power-Kill™ Rat Traps, and the M393 model traps are the black Power-Kill™ Mouse Traps (pictured). The trap information is correct and we are in the process of correcting the photos provided.

Which trap has the stronger spring, this one (M144) or the wood base one (M201)?

bought replacement batch on these May 2023. The new plastic power traps with teeth have a much stronger spring that the earlier ones, and I have to have my husband set them, which is a problem when he is not here. If you look through the item pictures in the post, you can see the difference

Anyone know a safe way to deactivate and re-bait?

Hold the U-bar in the back that is engaged in the plastic lock at the base, and use a popsicle stick to lightly push down the front black plate. Then slowly release the U bar and the red kill U bar will be deactivated . Now, you can apply PB or other bait like cat food into the hole. You can even apply some PB at the underside of the black plate. The rat will try to lick it, springing the trap. I usually use a medium-sized clay pot to partially cover it, propping one side with a rock to allow entry. That will help reduce accidental kills of birds trying to get to the bait.
