This book is told through dual timelines and dual love stories, and Rebecca Yarros handled both beautifully. One storyline is set during World War II and follows an American pilot and an English WAAF officer, while the other takes place in the present day with their great-granddaughter navigating her own romance. The chapters alternate between the two couples, weaving the past and present together seamlessly. The WWII storyline absolutely stole the show. It was emotional, intense, and utterly heart-wrenching, with a major plot twist I did not see coming. Their love felt raw, urgent, and shaped by the realities of war, and it left a lasting impact long after I finished the book. The modern-day romance was more of a traditional contemporary love story, enjoyable and comforting, though more familiar in comparison. While it didn’t hit quite as hard emotionally, it served as a solid counterbalance to the devastation of the historical timeline and helped tie the story together. Overall, this was a beautifully written, emotional read that highlights love in both its timeless and evolving forms. If you enjoy dual timelines, historical romance, and stories that will break your heart before putting it back together, this one is well worth the read.

Rebecca Yarros has a way of making you feel every emotion, and the dual timelines kept me invested, especially as both love stories unfolded. The enemies-to-lovers dynamic in the present timeline had great banter and chemistry, while the historical storyline carried a lot of heart. I appreciated how everything tied together in the end, even if parts of the book felt slower than I expected. I can definitely see why so many readers love this one. The character development was strong, the writing was engaging, and the ending packed an emotional punch. That said, I wasn't completely captivated the entire time, and there were moments where the pacing dragged. If you enjoy emotional romances, dual timelines, and stories that focus more on the journey and character growth than high spice, I'd definitely recommend giving it a try. Coming from someone who found Rebecca Yarros by reading fourth wing, this book is nothing like it yet completely amazing. It's a tale of two love stories - one in modern times between a writer and a headstrong, jaded artist, and the other set in world war 2 that you have to piece together through letters and stories. Both stories are powerful and addictive, with endings that you'll need tissues for. I read it in a day because there was no way I could put it down.

This is the best read of 2021 and it's not even close. I know there are seven months of the year left, but this will be the best read of 2021 when all is said and done. I know Rebecca Yarros is my favorite author, but I say this completely unbiased. Best. Read. Of. The. Year. Goodreads lost my original review, so I'm rewriting it, but it doesn't matter... no words I could write could do this beautiful love story justice. We get two love stories in one in this book, Scarlett and Jameson in WWII and Georgia and Noah in present-day. Scarlett and Jameson were almost forbidden lovers--he was an American helping the Royal Air Force in WWII, borderline committing treason. Scarlett was British elite and a high-ranking officer. Yet the second they saw each other, they knew. It was a whirlwind romance where two halves of one soul found each other, and was meant to be. It was the kind of love that romance books are written about... ...and it was! Scarlett was an aspiring novelist during WWII, and when her son William was born and Jameson was still out flying in the middle of war, she started writing their love story for her son. She continued to write it as she grew older and wrote over seventy other books, but she never finished it. She couldn't, for so many reasons. So what happened? Well, when Scarlett passed away at the ripe old age of 100, she left everything to her great-granddaughter Georgia, who she raised because her mother was a flighty, selfish... it's not about Ava. Georgia moved back to Scarlett's estate and no longer believed in the romances her Gran wrote...her ex-husband was a real piece of work. When she gets home, she finds that her mother pretended to be her (as her grandmother left her literary estate to her as well) and tried to sell off the Scarlett and Jameson's unfinished love story to Noah Harrison, a writer who writes endings that tear your heart out, versus happily ever afters. Georgia relents, sort-of, and thus her relationship with Noah begins. We get two amazing love stories in one novel. I found myself deeply invested in Noah, Georgia, Jameson and Scarlett. I was rooting for all of them. For them as people. For their growth. For their love. We watch as Noah and Georgia fight for the love Scarlett and Jameson had. We watch as they learn poignant lessons along the way as they get further into the love Scarlett and Jameson had. The last quarter of this booked wrecked me. There were so many twists and turns... hats off to Rebecca for never tipping her hand... I didn't see any of it coming. In the end though, everyone gets the happily ever after they deserve (even you, Damian), but how they get that happy ending? Well, you'll just have to read and find out. 5 emotionally-charged, beautiful stars. Run, do not walk to reading this one. As always, YMMV, but you do not want to miss out on reading this one.

Wow. Just, wow. So I went into this blind. I knew there was a divorce from the first few words in the synopsis I accidentally read, but that was literally all I knew. I cannot remember the last time I cried so hard reading a book. It was such a beautiful, though heartbreaking, story. My review will in no way do this book justice, or adequately convey my feelings about it. I can’t seem to gather my thoughts cohesively, so this will be scattered. I have so much to say, but also don’t want to give any spoilers. These characters stole my heart. Both men are truly swoon-worthy. While Noah’s previous “bachelor” ways are briefly (and more vaguely) mentioned, both men are gentlemen. The women show strength and intelligence. But all have moments of vulnerability. This was my first Rebecca Yarros book, so maybe it’s how she typically writes, but, I loved the way the spicy scenes weren’t overtly explicit. They were still somehow very passionate. There was a point in the book that I wasn’t loving the flashbacks, or rather the placement of them. They happen at such inopportune times. Just when I’m catching my stride and getting into the story, we go back in time. And the same happens in the past timeline. I get into it, and we jump into present again. I understand the reason for it stylistically, but it was still frustrating. That said, I realized about halfway through the reason it felt this way is because I loved all the characters so much. It wasn’t like one of those multi-POV books where I didn’t like this person and couldn’t wait to get back to someone else. I just genuinely was so invested in them all, in all the stories, that it was hard to break away once immersed. The way the puzzle pieces come together kind of blew me away. In hindsight, it all made sense. Really, I enjoyed her writing style immensely. PAST At one point, my notes say “Is this a historical Romance?! I think I could love it.” I love the romance of that era. Her modesty and morals. There’s just such a sweet innocence about it. While a wartime romance isn’t for the faint of heart, I enjoyed the sense of urgency it created. The unknown of tomorrow. The way it matures a person, living through that. I found myself wishing I understood more about the politics of the time (though admittedly that could very well be my own ignorance, and not that anything was missing from the book). And more of the particulars of what Scarlett and Constance were doing in the WAAF. PRESENT Georgia and Noah’s banter was fun. The care he shows her throughout the book is next level. He sits her down and reverses roles. He makes her tea. He explains how he won’t let her fall if she climbs.

Audiobook 4/5 ⭐️ Story 4/5 ⭐️ The Things We Leave Unfinished was a beautifully layered romance that kept me hooked from start to finish. The dual timelines and multiple POVs worked really well, weaving together the tragic love story of Scarlett and Jameson during WWII in England with the rivals-to-lovers dynamic between Georgia and Noah in present-day Colorado. Scarlett and Jameson’s story clearly takes center stage and for good reason. Their love was heartbreaking and unforgettable, and I found myself far more invested in their journey. The plot twist genuinely caught me off guard, which added an extra punch to an already emotional read. As the story built toward the ending, I teared up more than once; it really stays with you. I also loved the audiobook experience; the dual narration by Tim Page and Carly Robins was excellent and brought so much depth to the characters. I’d definitely recommend reading this while listening to the audiobook to get the full emotional impact.

I loved reading every page of this book!! Loved the back and forth of the stories and the writing was fabulous! I highly recommend this book!

This was a good story but too long for me. Like her other books the ending and plot twist was shocking. It was nice to see two stories unfold. Like most romances we all knew how it would end but this one came with family issues and heart break. The outlook on the war was also great.

Have you ever read a book so beautiful and powerful that you’ve been reluctant to put your feelings about it into words, only to find that, over time, you’ve forgotten many of the emotions you wanted to express? That’s exactly what happened to me with this book. I picked it up without knowing it would become one of my favorite reads from last year. The letters in this story were both heartwarming and heartbreaking, and the chemistry and emotional tension in both love stories were intense. Though I anticipated certain parts of the ending, I couldn’t help but wish for things to turn out well for everyone. This book made me feel as if I were mourning the loss of a real person—it made me cry, laugh, shatter my heart, and ultimately heal it. Each love story was written with such beauty, and I’m so grateful that some characters found the happy ending they deserved. The way the struggles, pain and separation caused by wars were conveyed made me feel everything the characters were experiencing. Even now, my heart still aches when I think of how it ended for some, and my mind is still tangled in the emotions, but if I could give this book a million stars, I would.
