MastechMS8229 Auto-Range 5-in-1 Multi-functional Digital Multimeter

Primero, diseño y construcción. Los materiales son buenos, cuando lo ves, sabes que estás ante algo mínimamente decente. La calidad de construcción es muy buena, pero tiene 2 fallos: la rueda/selector, aunque funciona genial, si somos un poco tiquismiquis podemos decir que es mejorable, ya que puede quedarse a mitad de camino, la sensación de rotación no es tan, tan buena como la de otros multímetros más caros, etc... y lo que sí está mal diseñado es la goma verde de alrededor. Esta goma se puede quitar, pero el problema no está en el montaje o desmontaje. El problema está en que cuando está puesta, la lengüeta o ranura que engancha a la goma por los laterales es muy pequeña, y se puede salir de su sitio, y estéticamente queda feo. Es gracioso, porque en las fotos del producto, aquí mismo en Amazon, puedes observar en los laterales cómo la goma está salida. Es un error puramente estético, pero no debería pasar. El resto del diseño, los agujeros de las puntas, los botones... todo perfecto, muy bueno.En cuanto a la pantalla, aunque tenga la gran característica de ser retroiluminada, los ángulos de visión son bastante deficientes. Tampoco es muy importante, puesto con la pata trasera sacada y apoyado en la mesa, desde una silla se ve perfectamente, pero en cuanto lo movemos un poco al lateral o arriba y abajo, la visibilidad de la pantalla empeora una barbaridad, los números casi desaparecen. Es una lástima, deberían poner una pantalla que tenga mejores ángulos de visión, se nota sobretodo cuando trabajamos de pie.Respecto a funcionalidades, está muy, muy bien, tiene de todo, incluso en la pantalla puedes ver la temperatura y humedad del ambiente, es genial como referencia, además de tener un sensor para medir temperatura de forma más precisa. Los agujeros se iluminan alrededor para que sepas dónde tienes que poner las puntas, y aunque no sea del todo necesario para los expertos, le da un toque moderno, evita que te equivoques y además pita y parpadea en rojo cuando las puntas están en agujeros que no corresponden, lo cuál para medir ciertas cosas puede ser peligroso (por el fusible que te lo puedes cargar, el multímetro también, o incluso hacerte daño tú mismo). A mí personalmente me parece un detalle muy curioso y se agradece mucho.Hay un gran fallo con una funcionalidad, que es la de encender la luz de la pantalla. Se enciende pulsando el botón de HOLD durante 3 segundos. El problema está en que cada vez que quieres encender o apagar la luz de la pantalla, la función de HOLD se activa, y tienes que pulsar el botón de HOLD una vez más para que deje de mostrarte la misma lectura congelada en la pantalla. En resumen, para encender la pantalla, mantienes presionado HOLD, esto inmediatamente te congela la lectura de la pantalla actual, y posteriormente se enciende la luz. Luego, tienes que darle otra vez al botón HOLD para descongelar la lectura.Las puntas que vienen son geniales, son de calidad, las coges y no son las típicas de plástico duro barato, además de que traen protectores en las puntas para dejar sólo la puntita al aire. Otro punto fuerte es que la punta es bastante afilada, y eso se agradece porque puedes tocar cosas con más precisión.El mayor problema que he encontrado es que en la función de continuidad, el pitido, aunque es rápido, es DEMASIADO sensible, y no uso sensible como cosa positiva, sino como negativa. Aún cuando las puntas se están tocando y hay CLARAMENTE continuidad y debería oírse un pitido constante, resulta que no, que el pitido es interrumpido bastantes veces, sobretodo al frotar una punta con la otra. Esto es un error, de gravedad media si hablamos de la función de continuidad, donde realmente buscas definición y exactitud en el pitido. La ventaja es que es bastante rápido. No obstante, multímetros de 200€ o más caros son claramente superiores en esta función. Cuando las puntas se están tocando claramente y se frotan, el pitido es constante y no se altera. Además, la respuesta es aún más rápida. Esta función en este multímetro es mejor que dicha función en multímetros de mala calidad de 8-30€, pero se queda a medio camino de ser decente, una lástima.Viene con pilas (no siempre) y el fusible que trae he leído que es de calidad baja, pero bueno, servir sirve, y siempre se puede cambiar.

Aunque desgraciadamente el precio bajó unos 10 € a las pocas semanas de comprarlo, el equipo es recomendable incluso con su precio anterior.Ahora ya no es Premium y no se entrega tan rápidamente pero sin duda es una opción muy recomendable.Opté por este modelo porque, según comentan bastantes usuarios, es de bastante mayor calidad que el modelo posterior MS8268, aunque este último pueda medir transistores y parezca casi idéntico (La calidad de construcción no lo es y la satisfacción de los usuarios tampoco, al menos en países como USA, Alemania y UK que son los que tomo como referencia a pesar del que el modelo nuevo es claramente más barato).El MS8229 me gustó tanto que acabé comprando una pinza amperimétrica de la misma marca con capacidad de medición TRUE RMS y corrientes INRUSH, que es también fenomenal, aunque un pelín peor acabada, la MS2108 (OJO, no confundir con la MS2108A que es un modelo más barato e inferior, sin TRUE RMS ni INRUSH ni 6600 cuentas...), de tamaño sorprendentemente compacta en relación al multímetro MS8229.Al margen de las múltiples funciones "no habituales" que incorpora y que le dan un valor añadido que no es crítico (Ej: Luxómetro, sonómetro, sonda de tempratura y sensor integrado de temperatura y humedad ambiente), es agradable e ingenioso su sistema de iluminación y avisos sonoros de las clavijas de conexión para no cometer errores al insertarlas según la función seleccionada... y para asegurarse de que están realmente bien conectadas.El display y su iluminación son magníficas, y la calidad del chasis, sus protecciones, botones, etc. son de buena calidad.La protección eléctrica interna también es de buen nivel.La precisión ha demostrado ser más que razonable para un uso incluso profesional y no comprendo las críticas de algunos usuarios al comparar este equipo contra Flukes que son 10 veces más caros...Aunque estos últimos son obviamente superiores en calidad, no lo son tanto como se afirma o como pudiera pensarse por el precio y, ciertamente, la mayoría de mediciones que he efectuado son prácticamente idénticas a los de los 2 Flukes con los que he comparado, en casi todas las mediciones...No le pongo las 5 estrellas por la caída de los 10 € y la falta de una funda de protección pero si lo comprara ahora seguro que se las pondría...La única queja que tengo puede parecer ridícula pero, ciertamente, me ha sorprendido que su sonido de aviso de continuidad es más bajo y menos claro que el de la mayoría de multímetros que he probado, incluso en comparación con pequeñas pinzas amperimétricas de la misma marca...Altamente recomendable

This meter seems to be pretty good. I don't know how accurate it is, but I don't really require great accuracy these days, mainly consistency and ease of use. I used to be an electronics repair tech long ago, where accuracy was important, but no more. Anyway, it does seem to be consistent and the results seem to be in the ballpark. I probably should have gotten something cheaper, but the specs for this sounded good.However, I think it's a little too big, although that's just personal preference. At least the display is easy to read. It seems pretty durable, but not as durable as it looks in pictures - the padding is not particularly soft, and doesn't provide as much protection as it might seem by looking at it.It's nice that it has a place for the probes on the back, and I also like the way it lights up the jacks depending on the function so you know that you have (or don't have) the correct ones connected. Just be sure to press in the plugs firmly, as once I realized that one was not all the way in, and the readings were weird.The layout is a bit complicated and not very well thought out. All buttons are the same size. It seems to me that some less-used buttons should be set aside or smaller. I never switch the degrees C/F (in fact, I haven't even used that function) and rarely need the Relative button, so it would be nice if the Range and Select buttons were bigger, and separated.I also think that the Volts and Ohms would be better placed on either side of the Off position, since they are the ones used the most, but maybe others would use other functions more, so that's a tossup.The flip-out stand is a bit flimsy and not very stable. The battery compartment requires removing screws.

The Sinometer/Mastech MS8229 multimeter that I purchased from Amazon was good while it lasted. Most measurements were close to what I got with a Fluke costing several times more (note that the MS8229 is not a true RMS meter). The meter autoranged as expected, albeit a little slowly. The continuity tester could be quicker and louder, but it is otherwise functional and behaves similarly to my Amprobe meter.The lighted probe jacks are very nice. The meter also beeps if you have the probes in the wrong jacks. The sound level meter came in handy testing our home stereo. The temperature (internal and external sensors) and humidity readings appear to be accurate. The luxmeter produces reproducible results.The build quality exceeded my expectations. The backlight is bright and the display is large and clear. There is no bar graph.All in all, the meter is a good deal except for the fact that it began producing erratic readings after three years of light use and then stopped working altogether.With a name like "Sinometer," of course it's made in Communist China. It would be nice if a more reputable vendor like Amprobe, Extech or Klein would make similar devices at affordable prices.Note that the MS8229 multimeter is identical to the Cen-Tech 98674 sold by Harbor Freight for under $40 (I got one on sale for under $30). At that price, this is easily the best multimeter value currently available.UPDATE: before throwing out the original meter from Amazon, I decided to take it apart. I was surprised to see a clean PCB with many surface mounted components and lots and lots of pots. I noticed that the battery compartment was connected to the PCB with three springs. The contact pad for one of the springs on the battery compartment was covered with corrosion, so I took my Dremel tool and removed the corrosion and cleaned the contact points with alcohol and a q-tip. I reassembled the meter and it is now working again. I am adjusting my review rating from two to four stars.

First off, I have no background in electrical engineering, or anything even remotely similar - my knowledge is based on some Googling, and high school physics classes.Summary: Extremely pleasantly surprised. I did not fully read what features the multimeter has before ordering - I took one that wasn't too expensive, and with automatic range. I've never used one with automatic range before, but figured that the feature might be nice. The price was almost three times as expensive as the generic yellow multimeters (without automatic range or any special features for that matter), so I feel like this was a bargain considering the features you get.The manual is quite thick, written in good English, and has very good warnings and tips for general operation. There are also some quite helpful physical formulae included in the explanations.The multimeter itself is well built - the plastic doesn't look or feel cheap, but the green insulation rubber is sort of flimsy and tries to come off from the sides somwhat easily, not really a big deal. The buttons don't really click, and the text looks like it's going to come off really easily, as it's printed on the rubber buttons. The dial is nice, and has some resistance to it - it also clicks really pleasantly. The display is nice and easily readable, and it even has a backlight.The feature that easily surprised me the most is that there are LEDs inside the input jacks - if I choose milli amps with the dial, red LEDs turn on inside the [TEMP µA/mA] jack, which is color coded red inside the jack itself too, so you don't plug in the wrong test leads. There also lights up an LED inside the COM jack, which is color coded grey. BUT if you change from µA/mA to whole amps ([A] -jack) and have a lead plugged into the mA jack, the device starts beeping vigorously to warn you, as (I believe) the µA/mA jack isn't fused, and could give you a shock as the leads themselves can handle 10 amps at most. An extremely useful feature, lightly put, that could even save your life if you have no idea what you're doing.There's also a luminance sensor on the top of the device, alongside with a microphone to measure the intensity of sound, and a humidity sensor. There's also an ambient temperature reading in top right of the screen, which is pretty cool. You can also measure temperature with the test leads.For the price, I honestly can't think of anything negative to say. If you're considering between this one and one of those 15€ yellow ones, I'd get this one.
