what do you mean by "generous battery life"?

Ssd drives do not spin at all like traditional hard drives at 5200 or 7200 rpm. So ssd drives do not use up your battery nearly the same. That is if you are swith in to an ssd.

I keep seeing the word laptop in the description. will this fit in my tower? its from 1996 but it is sata.

The reason it says laptop is because of the physical size of the drive. This is a 2.5 inch drive meaning it is small enough and to fit into a laptop. Desktop drives are usually 3.5 inches. So it should work fine but you will probably need to buy an adapter to mount it inside your desktop tower.
