Has answers and English to French excercises
I like its bold print ,lightweight format. Plus it forces me to formulate in French my answer from English. Most of my review books start with French and so I learned how to translate, read better than to formulate in my head first a sentence. J’ai un cheval. This gives me hope for speaking if I ever get back to France. I’m self studying and an A2. Three review books no classes retirement leisure. I agree with others this can’t be your first book.

Good for False Beginners or as supplement
Basic French is meant for those who already have 1 year of high school-level French or are using the book as a sort of workbook supplement to a beginner's level course. It is not for true beginners and it states this in the Introduction.Pros:1. Great for false beginners who need to refresh their French or CEFR scale A1 level learners looking for a practice workbook.2. Clear, concise unit exercises.3. The 3rd Edition updates some of the minor issues that were still present in the 2nd Edition (missing gender distinction in the Vocabulary tables, etc.), as well as several of the facts in the "Faits divers" (Fun Facts) when it comes to who's married to whom or now an ex-spouse.5. Both pro and con, it has accompanying audio (for the exercise answers) on the McGraw-Hill Language Lab website and smartphone app.Cons:1. You won't study verb tenses or moods that other "beginner" (CEFR A1-A2) French textbooks consider standard: Imparfait, Futur simple, Impératif, Conditionnel Présent, Subjonctif Présent. McGraw-Hill published "Practice Makes Perfect: Intermediate French Grammar" by the same author that covers these subjects and more, but it hasn't been updated since 2013.2. McGraw-Hill Language Lab website/app. The website/app doesn't bookmark the exercises you have done or listened to, so there's no point to install it. I wish they would offer MP3 downloads instead like Colloquial languages or Didier. I would even prefer CDs.

Good, but no pronounciation guide at all
As a French grammer primer, this book is very well laid out. The chapters are very manageable, short, and focused on a specific theme or grammatical issue. The written exercises are also quite well constructed. The most difficult and crucial thing about French, however, is pronounciation. This book does not even contain a written guide to how pronounce French. It claims that there is a McGraw Hill app that will guide students in that area, but the app does not even refer to this book. So useless on this crucial aspect of French.
