"THE ULTIMATE DINOSAUR BIOGRAPHY," hails Scientific American : A thrilling new history of the age of dinosaurs, from one of our finest young scientists. "A masterpiece of science writing." — Washington Post A New York Times Bestseller • Goodreads Choice Awards Winner • A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR: Smithsonian, Science Friday, The Times (London), Popular Mechanics, Science News "This is scientific storytelling at its most visceral, striding with the beasts through their Triassic dawn, Jurassic dominance, and abrupt demise in the Cretaceous." — Nature The dinosaurs. Sixty-six million years ago, the Earth’s most fearsome creatures vanished. Today they remain one of our planet’s great mysteries. Now The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs reveals their extraordinary, 200-million-year-long story as never before. In this captivating narrative of natural history (enlivened with more than seventy original illustrations and photographs), Steve Brusatte, a young American paleontologist who has emerged as one of the foremost stars of the field—naming fifteen new species and leading groundbreaking scientific studies and fieldwork—masterfully tells the complete, surprising, and new history of the dinosaurs, drawing on cutting-edge science to dramatically bring to life their lost world and illuminate their enigmatic origins, spectacular flourishing, astonishing diversity, cataclysmic extinction, and startling living legacy. Captivating and revelatory, The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs is a book for the ages. Brusatte traces the evolution of dinosaurs from their inauspicious start as small shadow dwellers—themselves the beneficiaries of a mass extinction caused by volcanic eruptions at the beginning of the Triassic period—into the dominant array of species every wide-eyed child memorizes today, T. rex , Triceratops , Brontosaurus , and more. This gifted scientist and writer re-creates the dinosaurs’ peak during the Jurassic and Cretaceous, when thousands of species thrived, and winged and feathered dinosaurs, the prehistoric ancestors of modern birds, emerged. The story continues to the end of the Cretaceous period, when a giant asteroid or comet struck the planet and nearly every dinosaur species (but not all) died out, in the most extraordinary extinction event in earth’s history, one full of lessons for today as we confront a “sixth extinction.” Brusatte also recalls compelling stories from his globe-trotting expeditions during one of the most exciting eras in dinosaur research—which he calls “a new golden age of discovery”—and offers thrilling accounts of some of the remarkable findings he and his colleagues have made, including primitive human-sized tyrannosaurs; monstrous carnivores even larger than T. rex ; and paradigm-shifting feathered raptors from China. An electrifying scientific history that unearths the dinosaurs’ epic saga, The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs will be a definitive and treasured account for decades to come. Includes 75 images, world maps of the prehistoric earth, and a dinosaur family tree. This definitive account explores the complete, surprising story of the dinosaurs: The Age of Dinosaurs: Follow the dinosaurs across 200 million years, from their Triassic dawn and Jurassic dominance to their abrupt demise in the Cretaceous. Mass Extinction Events: Uncover the science behind the volcanic eruptions that gave dinosaurs their start, and the giant asteroid that caused their cataclysmic extinction. The Living Legacy: Explore the startling connection between prehistoric ancestors and modern birds, revealing how the dinosaur story continues today. Chance can be a maker or killer !
The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs by Steve Brusatte left me with a sense of respect for scientific humility and a clearer understanding of evolution as a slow, uncertain, and deeply non-dramatic process. My overall feeling was that the book provides both awe and perspective: dinosaurs were not inevitable rulers, and the story of life is shaped by a constant tension between inherited traits and environmental pressures. The book’s greatest strength lies in how honestly it treats evolution—not as a clean sequence of breakthroughs, but as a continuous process blurred at the edges. Brusatte shows that what we call “major evolutionary milestones” are often retrospective labels imposed on gradual change, much like diffused inter-regional borders that exist mainly as administrative classifications rather than real divisions in nature. This perspective helps dismantle the illusion that species boundaries are sharp or absolute. The nature vs nurture conflict is implicit throughout: dinosaurs had inherited traits that gave them advantages (nature), but whether they survived or thrived depended heavily on environmental conditions, catastrophic events, and chance (nurture). The author is also refreshingly transparent about missing evidence, repeatedly reinforcing that absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. His discussion of why dinosaurs survived while biologically similar pseudosuchians did not is especially compelling, ultimately pointing toward chance rather than deterministic superiority. That conclusion resonates beyond paleontology, echoing modern human experience: success, whether biological or social, cannot be reduced to a repeatable formula. The book consistently avoids overstated certainty and instead presents evolution as a selection process shaped by both inherited traits and environmental pressures. Where the book falls short is mainly in accessibility. The frequent use of complex Greek and Latin scientific names can distance general readers and make it harder to form an intuitive connection with the animals themselves. The limited and sometimes underwhelming visual aids do little to compensate for this gap. Some concepts could have reached a broader audience if explained with more relatable analogies, similar to how writers like Stephen Hawking translate abstract cosmological ideas without diluting their depth. Overall, I would recommend this book to readers interested in evolution, deep time, and scientific thinking that values true uncertainty over false certainty. It is best suited for curious readers who are comfortable with ambiguity and willing to accept that both inherited traits and environmental factors, along with chance, play a central role in the history of life.

An exciting state of the art history of the dinosaurs and their discovery
Steve Brusatte, a Professor of Paleontology at Edinburgh University, is a brilliant writer who brings to life the story of the dinosaurs from circa 300 to 60 million years ago. The history of the dinosaurs is explained relative to the changing land mass of the planet and their discovery up into the present where so many new finds are being made. Each era is conjured with visual imagery of the dinosaurs in their setting. An active field worker, the narrative is full of anecdotes and firsthand experience of paleontologists in the field and in the laboratory. It is an analytical, absorbing and exciting read.

I didn't know I would be a dinosaur nut . VERY well written, fun and (shhh) educational.
I felt like a 10 year old who knows all the dinosaur names. I had NO idea they and their predecessors were so interesting. I was disappointed that the book had an end - I could have kept reading and reading. He is a great author who keeps your interest as he is talking to you - the reader and makes you understand that he is like us - just plain curious.

The best book to learn Darwinism
(Slight Rev03) Nowadays dinosaurs' fossils are investment for the rich (also Leonardo DiCaprio) and some paleontologists are a celebrity. Our image on T-Rex have changed from a reptile-looking to sporadic birdy-feather-skin appearance also the rout cause eradicating the most of species has been defined as due to the collision of a meteorite. These two definitions are not what I knew in my childhood or when watched the first version of "Jurassic Park" in 1993. Darwinism has worked on dinosaurs making a genetic link between birds not reptiles and this scientific discovery was done by contemporary technologies including statistics.
