How well does it work if used on ice?

The issue is that the weight of the balls doesn't apply enough downward pressure to keep them fed into the machine so it sits there and you have to walk over and push down defeating the entire purpose of the machine. Ice, no Ice that is not the issue.

Could you use this if you are a goalie for shot practice. Would it shoot fast enough for that or not?

They don't shoot out super fast for that, but if you have someone one timming them for you...that would be a lot better. It wouldn't work for goalie shot practice.

will the franklin mini balls work with this
