This is a long term review as it was bought July 2018.I very much enjoy gadgets however those gadgets must still serve a purpose and this item fits the bill on both accounts. I used this for a couple purposes, 1st to measure the moisture content of wood that I have cut down and milled to see how it is progressing along also when I'm putting together a chair or table to verify the wood is ready to be used ( hate to use damp wood and find your joints opening up! )Local home supply type shops around here have these types of things however at a much higher cost some north of $250 ! While I do enjoy accurate numbers in what I test, to get that 0.01% accuracy for $250 I can pass. I've found this meter to work just fine for my personal needs and would buy again.Some general thoughts:It arrived very quickly as I remember since we have Amazon Prime. To that the unit arrived packaged well and without issue.It did come with a 9V battery so if someone doesn't have a battery laying around this can still be put to good use the moment it arrives.I find this unit to be small and not cumbersome, it fits easily in the hand and the bright orange design I assume is to help someone not easily loose this.The display is large and the reading output is real-time, there is no reading delay. Not as if you press the pins into the wood and then 10 seconds later it pops out a number.While it lists dozens of wood species many I'll never use...so this unit I guess from myself can never be 100% verified against that full list however amongst those wood species that I do use, this works just fine.If I were to give it any knock I would say a backlit screen would have made this device perfect. Depending on time of day and where being used a backlit screen would make this even better.I'm quite happy with my purchase and I'm sure others will be too.Helpful, is how I hope you find my review

I am using the meter for Douglas fir firewood. To check the accuracy, I slowly baked the water out of a 6" long piece of 2" diameter of a small living Douglas fir tree using a toaster oven. Every 20 minutes I would remove the wood and let it cool to room temperature then measure the weight and take 4 meter readings (by pushing the probes well through the thin bark) along the length of the wood. I repeated drying and measures until there was no further change in the weight. At the end, I calculated the "living" water content/capacity and from that value, the "percent of capacity" and the average meter reading for each time interval. I was surprised how closely the meter matched the calculated values within a measure of 2-3%.

Was waiting for this to verify my wood for this winter. Tried it and got only 39% max for fresh cut wood that was also wet. Impossible, so could not trust the reading I got for this winter's firewood. Returned it. Probably a good meter when it works properly, these things happen. Got another make....

Not wanting to force anything, but how the heck do you install the batteries?The manual just states install battery. Do I pull on the probes to expose the battery compartment?Once I get them installed I will be sure to write a more comprehensive review.OK it is official I am an idiot. Batteries are installed and unit works as expected.
