Q: Do i have to have trim kit ?

No, you don't have to. I chose to trim b/c there was paint and calk and even a bit of a hole in the wall from the bigger Honeywell thermostat that I replaced. So instead of doing wall repair and painting, i just got a trim kit for $14.
