Do you have to replace the filter block, or the bio rings?

Yes,you have to but not always. You can clean the filter block maybe every three months and when it's really hard to clean then it's time to buy. For bio rings clean it with water from the aquarium and NOT TAP WATER so as not to kill the good bacteria and it depends how dirty it is. DON'T CLEAN filter block and bio rings at the same time maybe alternate again you need the good bacteria in the aquarium. You can buy it at petsmart, drsfostersmith.com or any pet store that sell fish.

Where did you put the heater and what kind of heater should I get? Thanks :-)

I used the Vivosun 50w around 10 bucks . I have two of the small 2.5 gallon fluval tanks, tropical setup with one heater in each tank set at 76 degrees. The Vivosun 50w fit's on the pump side no problem. We keep home at 73 to 74 so it kind of cool for the fish. In video you can't read the temp but you can in person. Fish appear mor active after installing. The pump compartment is the ideal location. 1. The water has been filtered and 2 this is the compartment the pump draws from filing the larger compartment with water at desired temperature. If your tank starts to algae the heater will have some refuge.

How loud/quiet is the filter? I work in an office with cubicles and don't want a tank that has a noisy filtration system.

The filter is very quiet. I have the tank right on my desk, and I never notice any noise.

Is the lid cat-proof?

I've not owned an aquarium that my cat could not get into if she really wanted to. One day I came home and the glass lid on the aquarium was broken in two shards on the bottom of the aquarium, and the cat was still a little damp and cleaning herself up at the back end. Hah! She fell in! 😆 The poor fishies were ok though, and so was the cat, and she never ever messed with those fish again. Problem solved. 😊 My point: If you can devise some kind of harmless unpleasantness that the cat can associate with the fish or tank, they may not bother it anymore. IDK what, but it's food for thought
