A decent buy
First of all, I'm a hobbiest, not hard core woodworker. Here are my observations:1. Needs sharpening out of the box, also need to strip off any factory coatings. I don't know laminated steel from regular steel, but seems like good quality.2. Edges are not rounded which for me leads to gouging. Since i don't have a grinder, i just plane lightly.3. Corners of mouth have a tendency to clot no matter how i adjust the chipper.4. Can be finicky adjusting depth.5. I've heard Japanese wood planers are slightly concave on the bottom, this one is flat. also, I'm told the company Mujingfang originated in Hong Kong. So this is probably a Chinese planer.Overall, price is right and doesn't feel cheap. While finicky, once it's prepped it shaves wood well.

Good steal, decent body
Amazon doesn't sell this anymore, so you have to buy it from Woodcraft. Good steal, decent body, it's worth getting if you want to try out this style of hand plane.

Really good
I just got the jack plane and it works well out of the box. Could use some fine tuning and it will work even better. Looking forward to tuning it up and just learning how to use it. Very nice.

Super
Love this jack plane, and have just finished honing the blade and adjusting the sole. Very little effort and great! I like it so much I recently bought a Mujingfang jointer plane, and can't wait for it to arrive!

Excellent Woody plane
I have several Mujingfang planes. All are very good to excellent values. I've had this one for 3 years. I like this one because it has a chip breaker. Excellent choice for learning how to use a woody. Just like any woody, it takes practice to learn how to adjust depth.Yes it needs tuning - check the sole for flat, easily corrected with sandpaper, the handle and holes may need a little work for the handle to slip in and out to the correct position (I mostly use it w/o the handle), the front of the mouth may need cleaned up to help chip ejection, and of course the blade needs sharpened, just like a Veritas or LN plane. It's a 2 piece blade - HSS end brazed to carbon steel. The HSS holds a great edge for a long time, and is slower to sharpen vs 01 steel. It makes a very good smoother if the chip breaker is tuned with a 70-80° ~1/16" tall bevel, and the breaker placed ~0.010-0.015" from the blade edge. The wedge and blade bed may need a little tuning to hold the blade tightly. This is not a Japanese plane, it is a Chinese style.
