Mermaid reveries along a timeless rocky coastline... shipwrecks and jewels, sea life and artefacts. A primitive, chunky necklace to adorn a siren's neck, featuring Ancient Roman glass fragments, ammonite focal, lava rock, baroque pearls, crinoids, labradorite, coral, amazonite, and hand forged silver links. One of a kind. An ancient assemblage with industrial touches, such as hand forged Argentium silver links. Fascinating fossils- ammonite (the iridescent nautilus-looking focal) is an opalized extinct sea creature, and crinoids (the white disks) are sea lily plants. Ancient Roman glass is perfect jewelry for the elegant armchair archaeologist. Ancient shards are pieces of history, little archaeological treasures that are like organic gems. I hand picked and paired each piece from a box lot of these artifacts, looking for patina, shape and color. The necklace closes with a sterling spiral hook clasp. It hangs about 18.5 inches. A note on Ancient Roman Glass beads: These ancient fragments are found all over the ancient Roman world, and today the most plentiful sources seem to be Israel and Afghanistan. The glass has been buried for many centuries- some of it even more than 2,000 years. They've been drilled and shaped recently, but retain the gorgeous iridescence that has developed through centuries of chemical reaction to the environment. The climate in the Middle East combines hot temperatures and flash flooding; the centuries of this exposure caused chemical changes in the glass in conjunction with the minerals present in the soil. The iridescence produced is simply stunning, and these shards absolutely become jewels the way they refract the light and change colors.
