Q: Is the base weighted and of decent quality?

the base is not weighted. but the globe is stable. I usually pick it up in searching for information. It is of good quality, and the gimbal feature makes it much more useful.

Q: Is this a current globe?

The globe is current as far as my experience so far. It is an excellent value. I highly recommend the gimbal feature that makes details in the southern hemisphere easier to examine.

Q: Is this globe made of plastic as described, or cardboard?

The sphere is made of a tough cardboard material (similar to most globes). And, after looking at it more closely, the base may be made out of some kind of aluminum or tin material rather than all plastic. Either way, it seems sturdy. I haven't had any problems with the globe yet with my small children handling it. Hope that helps.

Q: Where is it manufactured?

It says Made in USA on the map surface. That's good, but don't be fooled by the brassy looking base/equator piece. It's a painted metal. The globe itself is OK, but the whole piece is not a nice piece of furniture.
