How does it detect cadence, given that it's connected to the wheel roller?

It must be using the detected accelerations during any power stroke and then based on the silicon fluid dynamics characteristics and the roller RPM it can determine the power. By definition, Power = Work per unit time. Angular work is torque x theta where torque is "twisting force" and theta is rotation angle through which that torque was applied. So, Power = (torque x theta)/sec or in all angular speak Power = torque x omega (angular speed or velocity if you care about direction).  They can obtain omega directly from RPM. So all they need is torque. BUT they can get that from knowing the fluid resistance at any RPM based on the design.  There you go....they can quite accurately calculate the power that is keeping the roller spinning.  However, it cannot calculate all of your output power as there are losses between you and the wheel. So the power they calculate is less than you expend unless the entire system comprised on you, your bike, and the roller assembly is 100% efficient.  As far as accurate cadence?  That is a stretch.  The must rely (as another stated) on detectable impulse (time rate of change of acceleration) and infer from that pattern what your power stroke cadence is.   I hope this is helpful. can this be used to sync with a garmin edge 1030?

The inride uses Bluetooth to sync, so any Garmin device that can pick up Bluetooth sensors should work. I'm using an edge 520 plus

does this attach to the trainer itself or the rear bike wheel?

It has a taped glue on the back. Used to locate the device on the trainer itself. The instructions to do it are clear. Also on Youtube there are instructions how to do it. 1st just insert ehr rubber a nick of it. Then insert the metal magnet into the rubber a bit to as much you can with outexagerating your finger tip. then use "FlAT" wide screwdriver OR SIMILAR  FLAT BAR to keep inserting to flat in the TRAINER ROLLER. A BIT OF GREASE ON THE RUBER AND MAGNET METAL MAY EASY YOUR TASK.  WATCH THE VIDEOS TO EDUCATE YOUR SELF AND BE SUCCESSFUL ON YOUT FIRST TRY.
