Is the really 9 1/2 inches or is that a misprint?

When locked, do you need to unlock from the inside to open the door or will the handle just turn and open?

From the inside just turn and open.

My top deadbolt is 5 1/2 inchs above the doorknob this is replacing. will it fit?

Yes - It seems like the standard distance between centers of the deadbolt and door latch holes is 5 1/2". This works with about 3/4" to spare - at least to the collar of my deadbolt and that will vary slightly. I did try several different keyless locks and all the others I tried partially covered the deadbolt bore and had to be returned. This one works!
