Is the inside padded at all? I'm in the construction industry and need a padded backpack; would this provide sufficient protection for my laptop?

I don't usually get too excited about a backpack but this one is something to write home about. Yes, it has padding along the back - the part that goes against your back. My 8 year old son is using it for school and sports and he keeps his iPad in it. There have been NO iPad injuries - and you can imagine how often it gets tossed around and thrown in with tons of other backpacks at school and sporting events. It's got a separate area for electronics - which is not padded but is holding up exceptionally well.

So i see this rolled thing on top that looks like some kind of cover.. Is that a rain cover?

It's the cover of the shoulder straps. The cover will hide the straps when it closed, then the bag can be used as a messenger bag. The material of the bag is water resist. It not easy get wet. Our bags are high quality. I'm sure you will love it.
