Perfect dye for a Spec Ops break out bag!
Recently, the Army published a few changes to our uniform policy (AR 670-1). The new regulation states that Soldiers may only carry backpacks over the shoulder than are black, or that match the worn uniform (ACU pattern, multicam, etc). I have an OD green backpack that I have carried for 14 years. I have deployed to Iraq with it, and taken it everywhere. It bears the patches and name tapes that reflect my service and skills, and I am very sentimentally attached to it. I hope to pass it on to my eldest son when he is old enough, and when I'm retired. But, sadly, I cannot carry a green backpack anymore, and I just don't want to buy another one. So, with high hopes, I bought a pack of iDye Poly Fabric Dye. It was a bit of a challenge finding a large stock pot big enough to fit the backpack in, but my wife let me use our big spaghetti pot for the job. My German stove wasn't quite able to get the water to a rolling boil as the directions state...it seems the dye and color intensifier raises the boiling point of the water. But I kept it hot, and soaked the backpack in the water for a full hour, agitating it the whole time with some wooden spoons and keeping the backpack completely submerged the whole time. The backpack is 100% cordura nylon, covered with loop fasteners for attaching gear, and has big heavy zippers with para-cord drawstrings, heavy compression straps, and a synthetic lining. I fully expected to find that the dye would have been absorbed at different rates by all the different thicknesses and compositions of material. I figured that the part of the bag that was near the bottom of the thin stainless steel pot would be darker than the parts that were near the surface of the water. However, I was THRILLED to find that the ENTIRE bag is a very uniform, very dark shade of black, and is now totally in compliance with the new regulation. I cannot tell you how happy I am to be able to keep using my old bag! I rinsed it with a hose outside, and then gave it a few soaks in the kitchen sink, with only a slight darkening of the water. I am now giving it a gentle wash with color safe baby detergent, and I'll see how well the color holds without bleeding, but so far, it looks like I will be able to feel totally confident with it slung over my back, rain or shine, without worrying that it will leave any stains on my uniform. I can't praise this product enough. While my opinions are my own, and do not reflect the opinions of the US Army, I hope that any other service members out there that find themselves in my position will look no further than this product. It is 100% exactly what I needed, and it does the job perfectly! Thank you SO MUCH for this wonderful, (and inexpensive) product! It even arrived in record time to my CMR address. Five stars!

Worked Beautifully
Worked beautifully! I was worried because everything I read about dyeing synthetics sounded like anything short of a miracle. Even reviews I read here scared me - the mess, the smell, the spotty results, the stained washing machines and hands, the bleeding onto other fabrics. So I had to write a review of my own because without all of yours, I may not have had such positive results. I dyed a pair of micro suede boots from taupe to black. I could have bought a black pair for $30 more, but the boots were only $20, and the dye was $8. Instead of spending $50, I spent $28 to get what I wanted. The instructions are a bit too simplified. There should be a “helpful hints” sections that reads something like this: If you are working inside, cover your counter space. Open windows and doors for ventilation because there is a chemical smell that may give you a headache. Wear a mask if you’re sensitive. Wear latex gloves when handling the dye or the fabrics that are just dyed. (Duh!) DO NOT TRY TO TEAR OPEN THE PACKET OF POWDERED DYE! USE SCISSORS. Tearing the packet may cause the powder to fly everywhere. (I’m sure you’ve had that happen with a bag of chips before - same concept. Trust me on this one!) Don’t forget to add the dye emulsifier/enhancer. It’s small and can easily be overlooked in the package. Use a pot and/or stirring stick that will not stain, or that you can discard later. (I used a wooden spoon that I always use for “crafty” projects. It did stain the spoon, but it gave me an indication of how dark the dye was getting.) I let the water boil rapidly for the better part of a half hour. Then I let it stay in the pot a while to cool because I just didn’t want to handle hot water or hot articles. After the instructed amount of time, rinse until the water runs clear. Seriously, rinse for several minutes even after it runs clear, just to be sure. I did this under a water hose outside over the grass. (Met my objectives and watered the grass.) I left the article outside to dry overnight. Because I let it boil, there was some shrinkage that I expected. A little pulling and stretching before it was completely dried fixed that for me. I think I just got lucky there, tho. The finished product turned out better than expected, but my expectations were already low! Not including the drying time, the whole process took about two hours from set up to clean up. Good luck! :)

Husband bought this to dye some item of clothing. He was extremely pleased with the outcome.. the process was easy and the colour was deep and vivid. He would definitely purchase this brand again and would highly recommend.

Worked well as dye. Only problem is it is yellow and a little green based brown, not orange based like I was expecting. As a result, my light light blue fabric came out dark green-yellow. An easy fix, I just have to dye it now with red to get brown, and I knew that this could happen so I had a fix ready, but it is still inconvenient. The dyes should have the colour base somewhere before buying so you can get all the colours you need to mix at once. Also I know that is yellow/green based brown because that was the colour of the dye bath before I even added the fabric, so its not just a yellow based dye interacting with the light light blue. I thought the brown would be dark enough that you wouldn't end up seeing any green, I was wrong.
