Do you put the lid on while in use? Is it spill proof

Spill proof yes but the water can leak through the hole for the hose unless you seal with silicone gasket. DO NOT PUT TOP ON WHILE IN USE. HOT COALS WILL MELT PLASTIC TOP. You need open top to get air flow for coals and smoke suction.
