Size and shape of the pill?

about 1/2 inch (15 mm) long and about 5 mm thick. Pretty big if you have problem swallowing pills - because its 1000 mg (1 g)

If I wanted to start at a low dose of these at the beginning, is it hard to break them in half? (ie. Not too messy either?)

No, I wouldn't think that it would be difficult or too messy to break them in half. They may crumble just a bit...but I wouldn't think too much!

How long to achieve results for joint pain/arthritis?

i use this as well as fish oil for osteoarthritis in my thumb joint. it seems to me that it took about 5-6 days and then i was virtually pain free. my husband won't take curcumin however since he thinks it upsets his stomach, i have not noticed this for myself
