1001 Video Games You Must Play Before You Die

Encyclopedia of great video games
I cannot believe that this book didn't cost more. I have several books about video game history, but this is simply the best to me. There are both screen shots of all games and background information too, not to small or big or too little or too much. Well done. I bought the paperback version which was the latest version, but I would have bought the hardcover version if it was available for my destination, but for this price range I might buy this book again if it gets updated in the future with a hardcover version. If you have experience with home computers from the 80s like Commodore 64, Commodore Amiga, Nintendo NES/SNES etc, then you might also want to take a look at the books by bitmapbooks. Those books are incredible too. Get this book and one or more of the books by bitmapbooks and you don't need other books about games of the 70s and 80s. Other books are nice supplements too and the graphics only art books are nice to look at too, but if you have to chose one book only, then pick up this book.

Everything you need to no about videogames and more.
First of all just like to say that 2 of my favourite games and a serious game series are not in this book Burnout 3 takedown and Tony hawks underground 2 and there is not a single spyro game from the PlayStation one in it. Really cant believe burnout 2 is in the book and burnout 3 is not!? Suppose they cant please everybody to include every game they have ever liked all my other favourites are in here so good job. Very good book especially for £10 quality paper and a lot bigger than I expected. The book seems more a review on the games rather than 1001 you should play, as nearly every game they have mentioned include bad things about the game e.g. wave race. Every gamer should have this book and even people who don't like games.

Substantial and informative guide
Having owned a Sega Mega Drive, Sega Dreamcast, Sony PlayStation 2, Sony PlayStation 3, Sony PSP and Sony PS4, this book contains alot of interesting information and is a good starting point for discovering some lesser known games. Many of the additional platforms mentioned , I wasn't overly familiar with their game releases and to be fair, I doubt I will hunt any of the games down that I don't already own. That being said, it is nice to have such a vast and weighty catalogue of game titles. Just bear in mind it only goes up to as recent as the earliest couple of PS3 releases.

The perfect retro read
A classic book, have the hardback and also wanted an electronic version to take with me on my phone ! Tons of reviews, nice and simple, a screenshot and then text for nearly all the games. Ideal. Would love to see a sequel with games he might not have included in this book (there are a LOT of games in this book though !)

A must read for any gamer
1001 games over the past 40 years and bringing back memories for those that remember pong or a nice history lesson for the younger generation of how the games that are played today differed to those back in the earl 70'sHuge titles and games that you may say "i remember that one" or "i never seen this one before"It has someone for everyone in the gaming word.

Fails to do justice to the games included
I bought this book in the hopes of finding more games to add to my list, and it certainly helped in that regard. There's over a hundred new games I'm looking forward to playing as a result of this book. However, the short essays included with each game entry very rarely do justice to the quality of the games. They fail to convincingly present a case as to why the game is considered worthy of being in the book in a compelling way. There is also a general inconsistency in the writing, a side effect of having so many contributors.

An excellent stab at a tricky task
This book is very well done - I was pleased to see my favourites included (particularly those that may not have been as popular as others) and the standard of writing while a bit piecemeal is overall very good. I guess it is aimed at quite a wide audience - from an old retro head like me - right through to a modern gamer. It would be a good purchase for modern gamers who may have an interest in earlier works which sadly aren't always easy to get to play because of the immaturity of the publishing model for games. (Imagine not being able to listen to Sgt, Pepper on your latest hifi system or watch La Strada on your new Bluray player). The only issue I have with it is that not all of the games have a screenshot which I think is quite a bad oversight. These are video games after all - seeing what a game looks like is quite important. Just a pity the publisher couldn't justify the extra cost of making sure all entries got a screeshot. Overall though - well worth a look. A great book to dip into and the fact that the games are arranged in chronological order will help out younger gamers locate older stuff.
