What are the main difference between this and the xg29aqm? Why is this one more expensive?

The main difference is that the PG279QM has G-SYNC and NVIDIA Reflex Latency Analyzer. G-SYNC is a dedicated module installed in the monitor vs Adaptive Sync that provides better refresh and input lag. NVIDIA Reflex Latency Analyzer is a suite of display and software technologies that measure and reduce system latency for competitive games. These two modules are what drives up cost and are worth the price for folks that see value in them.

Does it work with ps5 at 1080p@120hz output with hdmi 2.0?

It should. The spec for HDMI 2.0 does support 1080p at 240hz. So if you’re playing at 1080 you should be golden.

Can i use an amd gpu and use adaptive sync over display port? reviewers say yes, but asus marketing says no. am confused.

You can 100% use adaptive sync on PG279QM, I just purchased it and you can, I went into adrenaline and turned on 'adaptive sync' via the toggle. Why there is no mention of it in the manual is beyond me
