Does the In/Bypass switch make any sound when it is switched in an operating system ?

I only used it a few times but when I turn it on there is a popping sound, by the way I am not thrilled with the overall sound quality. I used it with two different speaker system. One was with a set of Teals and the other Magnepan 3.7i.

need preamp to operate?

I believe it was designed to augment a preamp that has no tone control, such as my Musical Fidelity pre.

Is this compatible with Marantz NR1200?

Only if you use it on a single source, say you use it CD player. You hook it in-between the CD player and your receiver, I don't see a way to loop it into the whole sound of the marantz, just one component....
