It's two inches wide..I might wish for the grip to have rubber pads but that would add to the cost - they seem to work fine without that feature. I could also wish the wire "prop" between the handles for the tension were not so almost flimsy - my toenail clippers have a stronger support in there. But that could add bucks to cost too and it is holding up although I've only stretched 3 or 4 smallish canvases since buying this tool. I'm not sorry; the price was right and "so far so good".

You can staple on the back of the canvas stretcher bars to hold the canvas down or you can staple on the side of the canvas stretcher bars. Best! Howze Art
