Wow! This is one big thermometer
It is massive, that was the first impression I got when I unpacked it. Well packaged, with instructions on the back. This looks like it will last a lifetime, so worth the price. Well made item, will be using it for sweet making.

Takes the guesswork out of jam and confectionery making...
The first thing that was apparent about this Taylor Jam Thermometer was its great build quality. Made of a high gauge stainless steel, there's a strong black plastic handle at the top which makes it easy to remove from a pan as it stays cool. A sturdy stainless steel clip at the reverse allows it to be positioned on the side of the pan. And as jam pans tend to be quite large, so is this thermometer at 30x5cm/11.8x1.9". It has been extremely well though out in all ways. The thermometer shows measurements in both Celsius and Fahrenheit from 20 to 60C/200 to 400F - all clearly marked and easy to read in black against the stainless steel. Usefully, it also indicates the setting points for sugars. As I write, I'm aware there's also a Taylor Pro Jam Thermometer listed on Amazon with an rrp round about £5 more expensive than this one. I couldn't detect much difference with the Pro beyond that it's curved to fit with the curve of the pan. And with the Pro, the branding is on the plastic handle, not at the top part of the stainless steel. Taylor is a US brand specialising in scales and temperature measuring equipment - this jam thermometer was designed in Chicago. It was sold off a few years ago and longstanding UK company appear to now be producing its range of kitchen wares in this country. This jam thermometer is very well designed and will take all the back of a spoon guesswork out of jam making for me. Also good if you're showing someone how and they ask that dreaded question 'But how do you actually KNOW it's right?'

Quality product but pictures didn't show how high up the glass thermometer started
Didn't work for us with doing small batches of lolly's for the children, the glass didn't reach the mix in the pan despite using a very small pan. After burning the mixture the first time round and fumigating the house with the horrendous burning smell, the second time it work but was very very fiddly tilting the pan every few minutes to get a read. The quality is there no doubt, but the photos show a thermometer without glass just the casing so we had no way to know it wasn't going to work. Suggestion to Amazon to put a better clearer picture on the listing.
