I received this, and like it, but what is the screw for?

You turn the screw to tighten the holder in the CD slot so that it does not fall out. The additional pad that comes with the mount can be used if the slot is still too large to hold the GPS mount tightly. I hope that this helps.

Has the loose ball problem been solved yet?

I have not had a loose ball problem at all. My GPS fits perfectly on the mount. I leave it permanently in my CD Slot and just “pop” the GPS on and off for use and then storage. I think it it is a great product for my vehicle.

Will this fit into a casette slot? My car is an older one - 1998 Ford.

No, it needs to be a CD/DVD size slots only

If If I were to pop the gps off and on the mount frequently for security reasons, would the ball on the mount and the socket on the gps soon wear out?

I don’t think you will wear the ball out . My experience is removing the gps is a two handed operation due to the cd slot mount not being rock solid . It is after all an inexpensive removable mount . I tend to use one hand to remove the gps and the other to keep the mount from pulling out of the cd slot . The idea of just grabbing the gps and popping it off one handed might be optimistic . I like the mount but don’t use it daily . Hope that’s helpful
