Double heavyweight 180 gm vinyl LP repressing of this album from the rock superstar housed in a faithfully recreated LP sleeve containing all the elements of the original release. The River is the fifth studio album, and the first double album by Bruce Springsteen. The album was released on October 17, 1980. Rolling Stone ranked it at number 253 on their list of the greatest albums of all time. The sources of The River go back into earlier parts of Springsteen's recording career. "Independence Day", "Point Blank", "The Ties That Bind", "Ramrod", and "Sherry Darling" were leftovers from his previous album, Darkness on the Edge of Town, and had been featured on that 1978 tour, as had parts of "Drive All Night" as a long interpolation within "Backstreets." "The River" had premiered at the September 1979 Musicians United for Safe Energy concerts, gaining a featured spot in the subsequent documentary No Nukes. Originally, the album was to be a single set entitled The Ties That Bind and released in late 1979. Springsteen added darker material after he'd written the title track. Indeed, The River became noted for its mix of the frivolous next to the solemn. This was intentional, and in contrast to Darkness, for as Springsteen said during an interview, "Rock and roll has always been this joy, this certain happiness that is in its way the most beautiful thing in life. But rock is also about hardness and coldness and being alone... I finally got to the place where I realized life had paradoxes, a lot of them, and you've got to live with them." Review: Great quality - Great album, nice quality. Review: The River Is A Soaring And Uplifting Epic Triumph! - As Bruce Springsteen And The E Street Band successfully entered the 1980’s in full force and with absolute confidence, they released their next ambitious landmark masterpiece that brought them even further into the music mainstream in 1980 and redefine The Boss’ standing in the music world. The River is their sweeping double album (and 2-CD!) blockbuster which follow up on the themes and sounds of The E Street Band that highly showcase a robust set of mid-tempo rock, multidimensional solos stories of dissolution and hope in the working class, as well as of the struggle that are often dealt with. With a sweeping track set filled with both personal stories and personal outcomes abeited with high authority and solid performing, the tracks include Independence Day, Point Blank, the 8-minute plus Drive All Night, Ramrod, Fade Away and the title track, while the rest also include more light-hearted or high rocking classic hits including Sherry Darling, I’m A Rocker and Stolen Car. Another high mark for the album is the smash hit Hungry Heart, as it became Springsteen’s first Top Ten hit single, which combine a rollicking musical track with a more sober typical theme which have made it a Number One hit across the Atlantic. As one of the most highly ambitious and well-publicized rock albums of the 1980’s, The Boss and the band pulled no punches as they gradually showcased a masterful piece of music making that became noted for it’s mixture of optimistic outlooks, darker mat- erial, reconciliation, overcoming fears and a better tomorrow, as the elements help contribute to it’s power and energy. With an excellent combination of light-hearted pop-rock, solid rock and roll, dramatic songwriting and occasional humour in a few songs, this towering achievement highly well-showcase The Boss in a audio-driven wide-screen style form. Hailed as another of his greatest achievements, The River is another powerful testament that will always remain just as timeless as ever.

The River: A Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band peak moment
Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band at their peak. Had he pared it down to the best tracks and released The River as a single disc, it would've been one for the ages. The other, lesser songs could've been used as B-sides, as he would do later with extra Born in the USA material. As it stands, they only serve to water down an outstanding collection of first-rate Springsteen songcraft. Still great but could have been a stone classic. Four stars and definitely recommended, and especially recommended if you cull through it and burn your own five-star, single-disc personal copy.

All time top 10 rock album - audiophile must have
I don't like reviewing music since it's such a subjective topic, but if you're looking at this you already like Springsteen. For me, this is a top 10 rock album of all time. Decades later, it still holds up for me. There might not be another artist today that can elicit such images by their storytelling like Bruce Springsteen, and to me this was the pillar of his efforts. At this point I'm sure nostalgia plays a part, but also the instrumentation and lyrics still seem to make me feel like I'm sitting down with the band drinking a beer, listening to them practice. Many Springsteen fans feel Born to Run is his best effort and I like that one a lot too, but The River set a standard with me then and still that is hard to match. This album swings from a feeling like you're in a room in an old wooden cabin, sunlight streaking in from the side, to get up and jump while screaming out the lyrics in your living room. And everything in between. Springsteen tells stories of young and old love alike, being a little wild while still respecting others. Something that seems to have faded in 2018. If you're a Springsteen fan you already know that he tells great American stories devoid of violence. Rather, he preaches understanding and camaraderie for your neighbor. That's a message I never tire of. And if I can dance, badly, a little while listening, that's a good day in a life.

The River to the "new" America
In 1981, I was asked by a friend of mine if I'd like to go and see Bruce Springsteen in concert. He had an extra ticket and I dropped a couple of bucks to him and went to the show. The crowd was entering the arena laughing and thrilled to be at the show. Over the next few hours I was released into a world I had only dreamed existed. It was one of a rock-n-roll revival show. Except the band was young and full of an optimistic energy that was so genuinely sincere it engulfed every single person in the crowd into a sweaty dance party from some old 50's movie and equally brought you to a variety of scenes from the classic film noir cinema of the same era. The songs though, were brand new or very recently released within a ten year period. I had never, ever seen or heard anything at this level of quality. For the only time in my life I went to the local music store the next day and bought every remaining Bruce album I hadn't yet bought. A worthy investment to say the least. I am to this day an avid Bruce Springsteen fan. The River was the tour and the album that made me a fan for life. On another note, Bruce Springsteen is a true patriot.Proven, tried and true. Anyone who dismisses this purely because he has the freedom as an American to speak out about what he believes and does. Is wrongly accusing and misinformed.Above all else, anyone with this opinion about Bruce's music. Isn't listening to it. Simply put, nothing more and nothing else.

Bruce Springsteen eben. Zwar hätte es eine Scheibe auch getan, die Überlänge stört aber nicht wirklich. Fünf glitzernde Sterne sind so oder so drin.
