UPDATE Nov. 18, 2016: I ordered another two-pack of these based on liking the two I already have so much, and wanting these in a couple other rooms or perhaps for travel. They're handy when you need a flashlight for something, and reliable when our power goes out typically a couple times a year during storms. In fact I'm raising my review to 5 stars, for the price vs. value received these are outstanding. I hadn't realized it was 4 YEARS since my original purchase and those two units still function well. I see the old ones are slightly less bright than the new ones when I compare the beam side-by-side. One minor difference in the new ones: there is no silver reflector behind the front 3 LEDs. It's just a white "reflector" same color as the rest of the device. This casts a softer more diffused light when I compare on a white ceiling, but it's a minimal difference. There is still a silver reflector behind the 2 front LEDs. The new lights arrived fully charged as with the two I'd purchased in 2012. Original review: These units are less expensive than a couple of the competing emergency lights, one reason I purchased 2 of them. I received (on 8/7/12) model #71134 (without "CC" at the end, which is what was advertised here and that other reviewers mention). I don't know what the difference is with the "CC", but mine do seem to work well and have good illumination (there are only 2 or 3 LEDs, keep in mind) in the dark. Both had a charge when I received them. Both come on at power failure (tested in a power strip) with either the front light or the flashlight function as selected. There is no "night light" except a red LED (on all the time when plugged in) which would be an aid in finding the device in the dark but provides virtually no light on its own (the selected main light comes on of course if the power goes off or if you unplug the device). I opened one device up (4 Phillips screws) to check the battery type and there are 3 "AAA" batteries enclosed in a green plastic-wrapped pack (stamped "Ni-MH AAA 200mAh 3.6V"), which is soldered to the device circuit board (unfortunately.) So it will be possible to replace the batteries if needed, but it'll probably require some light soldering (or maybe my favorite, heaving taping!) of the wires to the battery pack. I hate throwing things like this away just because the batteries stop working. The good news is, they are labeled as Ni-MH, not Ni-Cad batteries, which should perform better. For the low price, this is a simple and effective emergency light that will help me find the door or the lanterns and other gear in an emergency or power outage.

Good product. Lights are very bright. Perfect for illuminating exit door. Plugs into a tight space that many others won’t.

Really like having these around when we get a power outage. Strategically plugged in around our home, they provide needed light with the added advantage of having a fully charged flashlight nearby. Have also given them to family members to use in their households. Should be tested from time to time since no battery can last forever and it's better to find out it has died before an outage.

As of me writing this review, there are four pictures for this light. The first is not as received. The other three show what I received. I ordered from Amazon.com directly, not one of the marketplace sellers. Neither the packaging nor the item itself shows the "CC" that is referred to in the description. It is simply model number 71134. It is made in China and listed as using 0.6 watts. The guide light (also stated as night light on packaging) is just a red LED that doesn't put out any ambient light, at least not enough to see by in the dark as a night light. It doesn't look red in the packaging, only when it is plugged in. For further info, I trust NLee the Engineer's review and recommend you read it and the others linked to it. I will elaborate more on the brightness of the unit compared with the Energizer NLee mentions in his review. Both the nightlight and full beam mode of the Energizer are brighter than either mode of the AmerTac, but I find the lantern mode (3-LED side mode) is overall brighter in that it covers a much larger area with diffused light. I expected to see three beams of light and a little area surrounding each, but what I saw was one soft, diffused light spreading out over the opposite side of the room which was surprising since the cover is crystal-clear plastic and not diffused. I was a little disappointed in the brightness, but it is easier to see throughout the room with this in lantern mode than with the Energizer reflecting light off the ceiling or floor (the Energizer only shines a beam up or down, not out into the room). So as a power-failure light, it puts the most light where you need it, which is into the room. Don't expect to be able to read by it, though, unless holding it in your hand. It also doesn't stick out from the wall as much as the Energizer. As a flashlight, it is barely better than the Globe mentioned in NLee's review, but good enough considering the dual purpose. I too would have preferred a nighlight mode, especially since I gave a few of these as gifts (and sure enough, someone said "it's not a nightlight"). I think these are best in bathrooms, kitchens and entryways which is why a nightlight would have been appreciated. Overall, based on the three different ones I have, I think this is the best value and usefulness, but the Energizer is better as a flashlight and the Globe has a sensored nightlight function, although it comes on in too bright a room (and don't forget the Globe model covers both outlets). Great power failure light. When power is lost or unit is unplugged, it turns on either the flashlight end with a narrow beam or the side light which covers a large area though obviously not as bright as the narrow flashlight beam. Plenty of light to see when the power goes out. Turned on two of them, one to flashlight and the other to side light and left them on. Still bright after 4 hours but when I checked again at 6 hours, they were quite dim (though still working) so they don't quite live up to the 8 hours of light claim. Still, more than enough time to find your flashlight and light some candles. Impressed enough to buy another set of 3.

We get 2 or 3 power outages a year and it's great to have these lites come on so your not in the dark and if you just need a flashlight and don't want to dig through drawers looking for one just unplug one of the emergency lites and use it.

These lights were very easy to prepare , and I had the opportunity to see them in action in 3 weeks!! My outage was only for 6 hours , but it was at night and these little beams throughout my house were very assuring. !!!!

lights function well for the couple I tested but they SHOULD NOT BE RATED FOR 7 HOURS. Mine were dim at the 5 hour mark. If they fixed or stated 5 hours or less for full function, I would not have an objection based on the ones that I tested.

Great in a power outage

Vi esta recomendación en Amazon de USA para lamparas de emergencia. Ya he probado yo las lamparas largas de mas lends y me dieron un mal sabor de boca al ver que fallaban a los 30 días (baterías muertas). Me decidí a comprar este modelo gracias a las calificaciones que tenia. Hace pocos dias tuvimos finalmente un apagon de mas de 5 horas. Y ambas lamparas funcionaron a la perfección. Mantuvieron un brillo bastante bueno iluminando las zonas en donde se instalaron. Lo interesante: Tiene botón para escoger en modo "lampara" (luz por la parte superior como si fuera una linterna de mano) y "Lampara de emergencia"( en donde ilumina con los leds frontales de manera mas ancha ) asi como "apagado" para que en caso de tener que transportarla o moverla, no se gasten las baterías inútilmente. También tiene un switch que retracta los picos del conector eléctrico para moverlo de manera segura. La construcción es de plástico y se siente frágil, no creo que sea problema ya que las tengo conectadas directamente a su socket. Lo cual puede ponerse de manera hacia arriba o hacia abajo. También deja espacio, no cubre los conectores extras de pared ( ejemplo, socket de 2 conectores eléctricos, pones la lampara vertical hacia arriba en el conector superior, y dejara completamente visible el conector inferior)

Works very well

Searched for emergency lights. Liked the look of these. They arrived today. They have US standard plug sockets and internals for 120v. Amazon UK should NOT be selling electrical products designed for the US market to UK buyers. I have now to do a 45 mile round trip to drop off return to my nearest UPS pick up point. The product may be great if you're in the US. Here in the UK it's of no use hence my review of the seller/Amazon rather than the product. ( there was no option to review the seller ? )

Bought for a legslly blind /deaf grandson. Gift . Will be super if works as advertized
