I've only had one of mine (I've had two of them over the past 60 years) clog one time. It was a lizard that must've been in when I connected the hose. Anyway, depending on what's in there, you can try holding your hand over two of the spray-arm outlets and blow in the other one, or you can try to push a flexible but fairly stiff wire with a sharp hook bend on the end into the sprinkler where the water goes in. Try to push the wire past whatever is in the sprinkler, then pull it out trying to snag the plug. My lizard got into one of the arms and plugged it which pretty much put the sprinkler out of business. I blew him out. If that's what you have, you'll need a good gag reflex. Good luck. (I think you might be able to shove a small stiff wire into the arm that's plugged if that's what the problem is.}

Q: How does this rotating sprinkler head make a square pattern?

I had one of these for 20 years and it does make a reasonably square pattern--great for typical suburban yards that are rectangular. Never rusted, but did start to get somewhat stiff to rotate, then one of the wheel supports broke. Ordered a new one and they sent me a circular pattern sprinkler. If yours isn't putting out a square pattern, then you probably received the wrong one.

I lost a nozzle the third time I used this sprinkler. The company said they would look at it if I paid to send it, and if they fixed/replaced it, I would have to pay to have it shipped back. I threw it in the dumpster and bought an Orbit 3-arm sprinkler with adjustable screw on tips that does everything from mist to a wide horizontal throw. I bought the Nelson because two neighbors raved about them - but they were both over 10 years old, and apparently the standards have been lowered. Save the headache and chuck the Nelson for the Orbit.

Q: Is the width of the pattern adjustable with water pressure?

Yes, it is sensitive to water pressure. If you turn the water down too far, it will not rotate, but if you're watering a small area, turn the water spigot on slowly until the arms start moving, then add a tiny bit more pressure to insure it keeps rotating. The sprinkler does water a more-or-less square area, so you can turn the sprinkler to place the "square" where you want it.
