Can anyone tell me the diameter of the timer? I want to plug it into an extension lead but will need to use the socket next to it.

I measured my timer, and it is 6.5~6.6 cm in diameter. I have mine plugged into my double socket (UK) next to the plug of my printer, and it fits just fine.

Is it possible to have the device set to be permanently on?

No. It is a count-down timer; you can select 'on' in 15 min steps up to 45 mins, and then from 1 to9 hours. Then you can go elsewhere and the device will switch itself off after the preset time has elapsed. If you want some device on permanently you should unplug and discard the is timer and plug your chosen device direct into the socket. If it is a switchable socket you should ensure it is switched on. I find this timer useful in the kitchen where a frequently used towel is often used and often damp. I have a low power (200 watt) heated towel rail.After using towel I hang it on the towel rail and set the countdown timer for a short period and leave it to dry the towel and then switch itself off to save electricity. Works fine.
