Yes., it works. We put it on a 4 foot pole in our yard where there are no trees or buildings so that we get an accurate reading. You can also stick it into the ground but this is inconvenient for us because we would have to take it our and put it back every time we mow our yard.

Hello! If you were to leave it outside I would say to make sure that there is not liquid in the sensors that will freeze and expand.
