Terror Tales of the Scottish Lowlands

Terrifying tales from the Lowlands of Scotland
An excellent entry in this long-running series, a companion volume to the previously-published Terror Tales of the Scottish Highlands. My childhood was spent split almost exactly in half between the Highlands and the Lowlands of Scotland, and while the Highlands have often attracted the greater interest and romantic associations, there’s a great depth of folklore and mythology in the Lowlands, too. It was great, then, to read spooky stories set in places I’d lived like Edinburgh and St Andrews. There’s even a brief encounter with a ghost in East Kilbride - my place of birth doesn’t get too many shout-outs in literature! As with all anthologies, there are stronger stories and relatively weaker stories, and which are which will depend very much on the tastes of the reader. There are tales set in modern times, and stories set in historical times. There are curses, ghosts, witches, cults, wraiths from the hollow earth, and supernatural beasts.Interspersed among the stories are snippets of history and folklore from editor Paul Finch, which serve to provide a context for the tales. All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable anthology, especially if you have any connection with the Lowlands of Scotland.
