Fascinating and Funny
I've been reading a lot of brain books recently and this is one of the best. It reminded me of Daniel Kahneman's Thinking Fast,Thinking Slow, and of On Intelligence by Jeff Hawkins. Like those books, it made me feel like I was an ideal observer, looking into my own brain churning away doing its stuff, and finally understanding how I work. Exhilarating. But Stephens's book stands apart from the others in one important way. It reads like a novel. I powered through it in a weekend. In fact, I set aside a pretty good Scandinavian suspense thriller to read this one because this one was more fun. Believe me, I don't often set aside Scandinavian thrillers to delve into advanced biology. The people I was with kept asking me what I was laughing about and looked skeptical when I said "neural science," but it's true. The thing is, in this book, "funny" is not comic relief. The jokes and wisecracks and metaphors are all integral to making complex topics clear as glass. Perhaps it was only my right brain laughing, but it sure felt like all of me reading.

This is an excellent book about the brain and how to use it
This is an excellent book about the brain and how to use it. I've read a number of neuroscience books -- both about the science, and the philosophy of consciousness -- and this is the best one I've read. Dr. Stephens takes us through an easy-to-read, funny, and thought provoking journey through our most important organ. The humor is laugh-out-loud funny, and he also gives us tips on how to make the most of our brains. If you are reading this review, I urge you to buy this book now. It is deep and wonderful.

Really interesting book to introduce the reader towards a possible new concept on how our brain functions. This book will give the reader an insight on a technique on how novel ideas could be generated and further elaborated. Being written by an electronic engineer with a PhD, it looks to me that the underlying attempt of the author to dive into the processing mechanics of our brains is really to export these mechanism to artificial intelligence. While the actual writing style could be questionable, this book will seed the reader with curiosity towards the fascinating field of neurology. I recommend reading it and eventually expand on further knowledge by reading more in-depth text books as referenced by the author.

Stephens brings really complex subjects down to an understandable layman's level
Awesome book! Stephens brings really complex subjects down to an understandable layman's level. And he's really funny! As more of an English and Arts kind of person, I WANT to better understand science and this book shows you that the concepts aren't all that different and that yes, you too little English nerd, can grasp brain science.

Terrible
What happens when the author, a physicist, decides for some reason, to write a book purportedly reviewing neuroscience. Oh, and for other unknown reasons, he reveals a terrible weakness for slang and "Dad jokes" while failing to cover the topic in even a rudimentary fashion. Sometimes the book seems to be a Buddhist riff, and at others a non-insightful self-help book. Yes, the left and right sides of the brain exert motor control over the opposite sides of the body, and yes, the left side is more analytic and the right more "holistic." None of that is new, and there are no interesting insights about anything. There are some interesting stories about various people, but they do not serve to illustrate or move forward any sort of cogent theme. So, great title, worthless book.

An easy and stimulating read
The authors uses vernacular language to explain complex concepts and things of that nature in a very digestible way for anyone; it was a very invigorating experience.

This is a rather interesting read, just thought the title was catchy, but I am enjoying the author's dry humor and informative science nerd stuff.
