Review: Still a banger - For when this was written it's definitely 5 stars. The only thing that holds it back now is the language can be tough to follow, but it's not hard to look up a phrase to learn what they mean. Review: Fifteen men in a dead man's chest. Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum - Absolutely classic. My 12 year old loves it

Worth a read
After volume 5 of The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion, and a recent rereading of The Wednesday Wars, I decided it was past time for me to read Treasure Island. I don’t think I need to read any more pirate stories, but it had some fun, some excitement, and some pathos.

A worthy classic.
For the modern reader, this book may be challenging to read at times due to its advanced writing style. However, once one gets into the groove of reading it, the story becomes very engaging. It gets particularly interesting in the second half of the book, but I found all of it enjoyable overall. It really brings to life so many of the pirate motifs portrayed in modern media, in a way that you may have never quite thought of, such as the idea that a chest owned by an old buccaneer could smell of tobacco. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes reading about grand adventures in unexplored lands. Pieces of eight!

Better than expected
I see why it's a classic, really glad I took the time to read it. The "english" is a little hard to follow at times but still a great book.

Good story, needs updated language
"Have I lived this many years, and a son of a rum puncheon cock his hat athwart my hawse at the latter end of it?" This book was an excellent story, but in language that unfortunately did not stand the test of time and made for some heavy difficult reading.

A Classic Adventure That Still Delivers – Great Kindle Edition
I recently finished reading Treasure Island on Kindle, and even though it was written well over a century ago, it absolutely holds up as a gripping and imaginative adventure story. Robert Louis Stevenson’s writing is vivid, and the pacing feels surprisingly modern in many parts. This edition made it really easy to enjoy the book, even with the older language and setting. At its core, Treasure Island is the original pirate adventure tale, and it’s easy to see why it’s inspired so many stories since. The mix of mystery, suspense, and action kept me fully engaged. Jim Hawkins, the young narrator, offers a relatable perspective as he’s thrown into a dangerous world of mutiny, treasure maps, and shady alliances. But the real standout is Long John Silver — one of the most complex and fascinating characters I’ve come across in classic fiction. He’s charming, manipulative, and morally ambiguous in a way that feels ahead of his time. The story builds momentum gradually, and once the voyage begins, it’s hard to put down. There’s just enough danger, intrigue, and clever plot twists to keep it interesting for both younger and older readers. This Kindle edition is clean and well-formatted. The text is easy to read, with consistent spacing and proper chapter breaks. I also appreciated the built-in dictionary and X-Ray feature, which was helpful for quickly looking up older or nautical terms without breaking the flow of reading. It’s ideal for anyone new to reading classics on Kindle. One small thing to note: this edition doesn’t include any introduction, annotations, or historical context. While that may not matter to everyone, it would’ve been helpful to have a bit of background on Stevenson or the time period to better appreciate some of the references. If you're curious about literary context or deeper themes, you might want to supplement with a quick online search or a more annotated version.

A Classic with Charm, but Not Quite the Masterpiece I Expected
Given the immense reputation surrounding Treasure Island and its author, Robert Louis Stevenson, my expectations couldn’t have been higher. While the book is far from unpleasant to read, I must admit that, in my view, it doesn’t fully live up to the legendary status it holds. The narrative style is indeed innovative for its time, especially in the way it presents adventure through the eyes of young Jim Hawkins. However, the plot itself is not particularly exceptional. It follows familiar beats and rarely surprises, making the overall experience feel more like watching an enjoyable but predictable afternoon adventure movie. That’s not to say the book lacks merit, its charm, straightforward storytelling, and iconic imagery certainly explain part of its influence on pirate lore in popular culture. Still, considering all the reverence around Treasure Island, I expected something far more impactful. A pleasant read, yes, but for me, not quite the masterpiece its reputation suggests.
