Guide, The Film: Perspectives

The book is brilliant! Thoroughly enjoyed reading it. Guide is undoubtedly among the greatest of Hindi movies. The story of “forbidden love” between a married woman and a man is difficult for Indian sensibilities and yet the great commercial success and critical acclaim that the movies has received is due to the brilliant handling of the theme by the Director Vijay (Goldie) Anand and Shailendra’s poetry which Dharmakirthi, one of the contributors aptly describes as the narrative in lyrics. Shailendras’s lyrics raises the story to such a level of aesthetics that the forbidden love no longer appears gross to the viewer.The plot of the story is similar to Leo Tolstoy's masterpiece Anna Karenina in which the characters acquire a life of their own and Tolstoy is a mere narrator - the hallmark of a great novel. Tolstoy, however, forces himself on the story while ending it with Anna committing suicide - an implausible end taking into account Anna's character that comes to life in the novel. Guide also ends with promises unfulfilled and regrets.The Book celebrates a great work with deep insights into what makes for a great movie and enhances our appreciation of the movie by a factor of 10.

GUIDE is my all time favourite film. I'm kinda obsessed with it. The forbidden, scandalous, and socially impermissible romance between a married woman and a tour guide, ultimately leading to the latter's spiritual enlightenment is a stuff of legends. Reading the perspectives of accomplished people belonging to varied fields expanded my horizons and lent me some overlooked and unseen outlooks. Thankful to the authors involved with it.
