Based on a Sansai 山菜ナイフ Knife from Japan, the Mtn Tree Hori Hori Gardening knife will be the most diverse tool you add to your collection. The best tool to not only have in the garden, but any outdoor activity that requires a reliable, strong, and sharp blade that never falters. In the garden, the Hori Hori holds multiple roles, making it an ideal companion for an entire day of planting. If you find yourself carrying pockets full of tools, and still not having the correct one right at hand, you're going to love the multi-functionality of the Mtn Tree Garden Knife. And gone are the days of carrying around multiple tools and leaving them all over the yard for your children or feet to find. With the convenient and beautiful leather sheath, you'll have the one tool for most of your gardening tasks right at your fingertips. With the full tang, graduated blade, you can be sure that your seeds, starts, and bulbs are finding their home at the ideal depth, with no more guesswork. Gone is the concern about bending cheap trowel blades, or running into hard pack dirt or clay that less robust garden tools cannot handle. We've bent our fair share of cheap tools, and we know there are few things more frustrating while gardening than not knowing if you can trust your tools. Not just restricted to creating a beautiful and rich garden, these Hori Hori Knives are just at home out on the trail, or at the campsite. We've also taken them into the backcountry as a "do all" tool. Space is of chief concern when carrying what you need to survive on your back, and wrapping up multiple uses in an indestructible tool is one of the best ways to be sure you are prepared. From preparing food, cutting paracord, gathering firewood, and simply digging holes, the Mtn Tree Hori Hori is an ideal backcountry companion. Whether you are on a week long backpacking trip, or at a local state park, you're going to be glad you brought it along.

Looks good, but practical use is flawed
I like the look of the handle and the sheath of this Hori, and the sharpness of the blade. But three issues make it hard to actually use in the garden. First, the fact that it has no hilt makes me very uncomfortable. I am always afraid, especially while working with wet plants or soil, that my hand is going to slip down the smooth handle and cut right through my muscles to the bone. That's not a good design. Second, the shape of the handle doesn't add any grippiness or comfort to the experience either: it's just rectangular in cross section. Compare that with well-made combat knives for comparison: the handle should be almond-shaped and should have some kind of ridging or ribbing or dots or something that affords at least a slight purchase when needed (like in common wet gardening conditions). Third, the sheath, although beautiful, is hard to use. The snap loop awkwardly gets in the way when drawing or sheathing the knife, requiring both hands for the operation, which is not an easy stretch when wearing the knife on the hip as most people do. The sheath is crafted with care with extra layers of leather where the blade touches the inside of the sheath (a design intended to keep the blade from cutting lacing that often holds knife sheaths together). However, the fit of the sheath is snug enough where I can tell it is not going to last long under continued use. The blade is slicing it up no matter how well it's made. And the sheath is snug enough where I dare not try to sheath the blade one-handed.I bought this Hori because the blade looked very high quality, and that has proven to be true. But the knife needs a comfortable pommel, an almond-shaped handle profile with some grip texturing, and a more practical sheath.

OK, but not the best for metal detecting
I've put it through the works over the past couple months. The guard has broken loose as well as the first rivet closest to the blade. The rivet is able to be tapped back in, and the guard being loose doesn't effect the functionality of the tool, but it does rattle around now. The blade is very strong and well forged. It's been put under many pounds of force (stepping on it to open a hole) and it hasn't bent or broke even digging in very hard, rocky ground. The serrations all the way up the blade are excessive. Only the first half from the tip are ever used, but helpful for cutting through grass or roots. The sheath is awesome. Not skimping on any materials with full easy draw and putting back. The serrations that go all the way up to the handle are cutting into the top of the sides of the sheath which will soon start to split it at the top of the seams after it goes through the leather side walls. The thick layered leather side walls are what makes this sheath better than most. Half of the value of this is in the sheath really. The blade is very dull after 2 months, but completely expected for digging in the ground. It could easily be sharpened again with a grinder, but would need a grinder. The wooden handle will give blisters after hours of use. I wrapped mine in medical tape and it has helped with that some. Overall, I would recommend for light use, but not for a main digging tool for using with a metal detector. The hand guard is very small, and the tool is very heavy to carry around on your waist. I won't buy again for the purpose I use it for. I would buy something more specific like a Lesche or Garrett style tool next time, but it did the job.

This one has the best sheath of the ones that I've purchased
I have purchased a couple of these under different brand names from Amazon. They appear to be the exact same tool, but with different sheaths and names etched on them. This one has the best sheath of the ones that I've purchased. These make a great tool for gardening and I have given them as gifts to others who enjoy gardening as well. I will buy this brand again over others due to the sheath quality.

Darn good.
This knife has an excellent feel to it. I've used it for a little yard work, and its quite effective. I can't testify to its durability yet, but I'm taking ti on a couple-week camping trip in a few days, so assume that if this review is five stars, it did its job well. The knife itself feels good in the hand. the wengewood handle also has a particularly nice look to it. I like the dark wood against the grey of the stainless steel. It reasonably sharp, but I'm sure I can get a bit more out of it with my whetstone.I should also mention that the sheath is of excellent quality. the leather is thick, and rather than making the sheath do that it is overly-tight, its made with layers of leather between the front and back panels, making it comfortable to draw and insert, without taxing the sheath or damaging the stitching. All in all, I'm glad I shopped around and settled on this one. I've already ordered another as a Father's Day gift.

One incredible HORI HORI !
We were looking for a sturdy well balanced garden knife to replace one of our more flimsy ones that really never performed. This MTN TREE stainless knife is incredible with proper balance, smooth handle rivets, excellent size grip, safe stiff blade, serrated edge cuts through potted roots and tubers with ease. The well made sheath with belt loop is the perfect compliment to the knife. Only one regret, we should have bought the HORI HORI sooner. Will buy another!

Handy Knife, Great Value
Really nice knife. I took it out with my metal detector and used it hard for the day, with great results. Due to it's rugged construction, it will obviously last a long time. I love the holster, and the finish of the knife. Even though I got it mostly to use with the metal detector, I can see using it in the garden in the spring, for planting. Great knife and great price.

Super tough
I've been abusing this thing for months now while metal detecting. It seems indestructible so far, and holds a sharp edge longer than I would have thought possible. Makes cutting plugs in dense grass a breeze! Very nice sheath also.

A versatile tool
you can use it all around the garden. It soon became my most favourite tool in the garden to pull a weed, transplant plants, cut small roots, prepare hole and root bulb for planting. It's awesome!
