I had watched a video that made it seem like this was a doable fix for me. I was able to remove the old handle and cable using pliers to get the black plastic bit out of its slot underneath the couch. Getting the new one installed was a bit of a problem as it came with no instructions. I was relying on the YouTube videos. I had trouble seeing and finding the hole to put the end hook into. So, I decided to put the black plastic piece into its slot first. That was a bad idea, as there was no longer enough slack in the cable to get the end into the hole. I then could not get the black plastic piece back out as easily as I did the old one. After a long time and many attempts, I finally was successful. However, I had the cable on the wrong side of the lever, so the couch wouldn't recline. Luckily, I had a bit of an easier time getting the black plastic piece out of its slot this time. After that, I got everything into place, though I was a little uncertain if I was getting the screws in the handle into the right spot on the couch. Once installed, the mechanism seemed a bit stiff at first, but after a few uses it seems to be working just fine. So, if you do things in the proper order and can see what you are doing, it's a fairly easy fix. So far it seems to be working fine a week later.

Better than the original plastic piece of junk. We spent several thousand dollars on 3 recliners and a sofa with a recliner at each end. One side of the coach recliners quit working a few months later. The store came out and repaired it as it was still under warranty. Months later,one of the recliners had the same issue. We switched chairs with one seldom used. Last week, the same recliner on the sofa quit working again. We called the store and asked them to send a technician out to repair it and was told that they didn't work on anything out of warranty even though we offered to pay for a service call. I looked at repair products on Amazon and found this item. I ordered a pair and received them 2 days later there is a You Tube video available to show you how to install. All that's needed is a Phillips screw driver and a pair of pliers. This product features a metal lever which beats the heck out of the plastic one that came with the original sofa and recliner. It took me 15 minutes to fix the recliner and 10 minutes to fix the sofa. If I could give this product 10 stars,I would. You can't go wrong with this item.
