Q: I really hate the new design. The original pad had adhesive on the entire pad and it was shaped perfectly. I hope it comes back or I’ll switch?

I agree as well. The original shape was why I bought them in the first place, and the extensive adhesive made them feel secure. Now they are just one of many, nothing special. So disappointed.

Q: what is the pad length?

Average panty liner/pad length. They are not extra long like overnight pads.

Q: If they have no phtalates, what is the plastic layer made of?

Phthalates are plasticizers not plastics. They are just an additive to some plastics. The box says the pads are free of polyester, rayon, and latex. That leaves a few possibilities, but they don't specify what they are using. I can tell you that it doesn't make me sweat --- very unusual for a pad.
