Startech hits a home run again with this product. Adapting CF to an IDE busnis straight forward and Startech did a great job. Fits well in a 3.5" bay. Has a nice finish

Work as expected. Great option but not cheap, 3d printed options are far cheaper but don't look anywhere near as good as these. Far more practical to use than the rear slot mounted ones, especially for machines where you are changing operating systems frequently.

As much as I wanted to keep using old mechanical drives, they're just a dying breed and I needed to find a way to transfer files on and off my vintage PC builds more easily. Combined with smaller CF cards (you can still buy 32mb or 64mb CF cards new on Amazon), I got a 486 up and running with this quite easily. I had a really old 286 laptop that needed a little extra help in the BIOS to recognize it, but ultimately it works great there now too. Dunno what I'd be doing without this item.

Wow! Great product for retro PC builds or otherwise getting an old computer going. I like that this can be expansion slot mounted or 3.5inch drive bay mounted. Only complaint I have is that it’s much shorter than an IDE hard drive was so on a single IDE channel system like mine, my ribbon cable is more taught than I would prefer as I have a Primary/secondary setup. If I had dual channel IDE it wouldn’t be an issue. The CF card also slides in well and securely.

I bought this in lieu of a similar device at Monoprice because Monoprice wouldn't ship it in an ideal amount of time. The price is steeper than I'd like to pay but I was in for a nice surprise when I found out the item includes both a 3.5" bay adapter and a rear bracket adapter, allowing you to choose where to mount it. I wanted to mount it on the rear but conceded in order to get one in a timely fashion. Having the option was a good treat, meaning I can keep the front of my retro PC in a relatively single-tone. The card reader itself works great. I successfully installed Windows 98 on the 32GB CF card I bought and I intend to install Me and 95 on two other CFs I've got handy.

I bought this to use in my IBM Aptiva 2176 computer so that I could install windows 95 on a Compact Flash and since this is a drive that I can access from the front of the computer, I can install win 95 and win 98 on a different CF card or even ME on one. This works great for those old retro computers.

Got this to replace hard drives in very old computers. Front mount makes for easy access. Cards slide in and eject smoothly. Build quality on chassis and PCB is excelent. Comes with a bracket so you can mount it in a card slot if you want, but you probably want to get this one so you can mount it in a front facing drive bay for easy access.
