Make sure the area is sealed well.
Read the reviews determined it would satisfy my needs. While my boat was wet slipped in South FL I had to leave a for about 8 months, I placed the unit Model IP-DH800 on the counter and ran a hose sink drain. Made sure the port holes had a tight fit, started it and left. Came back eight months later and to my surprise it was still running, the cabin was totally dry, carpet, cushions, bed all dry I was stunned. It’s a very reliable and economical product, my slip electric bill never increased. I didn’t want to use the boat AC since it has to many moving parts to fail as I was not there.

Does what it's supposed to do. Affordable. Quiet. Economical.
Though the reviews for this item were mixed, I chose to believe the positive ones and agree that those reviewers were correct.I bought this for our sailboat - so a relatively small area. It does what it's made to do, but not as fast as a compressor type unit. Of course, it also costs much less and uses much less power. My bilge pump counter "told" me that this dehumidifier sucked a LOT of moisture out of the air in our boat, and kept it drier, and better-smelling than it would have been otherwise.Very quiet - you can hardly tell it is running.I attached a hose to allow the unit to run without stopping whenever the container got full. It works great.I can recommend this unit without reservation.Just be sure that you are not expecting it to do the work if a unit that costs several times as much and uses many times the electricity.Great for a boat, SMALL rooms, sheds, closest, etc. NOT big enough for a basement.Added 7/6/19We've had this unit running for over a year and it is working great! One word of advice - if you have an area with major humidity problems - basements with porous floor or walls, locker room, standing water on the floor, etc - this is NOT the unit for you! You will need a more expensive, noisey, power-hungry unit with much more capacity. This unit has been performing flawlessly for over a year on our 30' sailboat on a Louisiana bayou. Keeps it dry, mold, mildew, and odor free for pennies a week.Added 10/10/2020We've had this little unit running pretty much non-stop for over two years. I had it switched off for a day while we were on the boat and had it open. (No point to trying to dehumidify all of the bayou!) When I turned it back on, I noticed that fan was starting to make some noise. I figured the bearings were getting dry. I took the unit home an opened it up. Unfortunately, it's all but impossible to get to the bearings to lubricate them without destroying the fan.Though I couldn't find the exact fan by part number, I found a fan or two on Amazon and eBay with almost identical specs (24v, .2amps, 90mm square by 25mm thick) that look to be drop in replacements. If you get one of these units and run it as much as I have AND find you need to replace the fan, it only lakes a long #2 Phillips screwdriver and a few minutes to install the new fan. Less than $10. Otherwise, the unit is great and still works.I probably could have let it go, but I took the mousey bearings as a sign of eventual failure and opted to fix it before it died.Even if you're not handy and/or don't want to fix a unit like this - almost two years constant use out of an inexpensive unit is still great. Prolly saved that much in electricity alone over the old compressor unit.I'd still buy it again!

Keeps humidity under control; easy to use; quiet
I LOVE this unit. I have a smallish travel trailer (24 feet) and needed to control the inside humidity without running the A/C every day. Bought this and a thermometer/humidity measurement device. With this unit running, the inside humidity is from 40-55%, well within the range you want. No problems with mold or "odors". It's quiet too, I've brought it on several trips but haven't used it; you could sleep with it running though. I bought this because you can connect a hose and drain the water directly into the sink or shower. I haven't done that, about once a week I check the inside of the trailer (not a bad idea anyway) and dump 2-3 inches of water from the unit. It works perfectly and I couldn't be happier. If there's an issue as we move into the heart of the Florida summer, I'll update this review, but I do not expect any problems.

Crap
I got this for my RV which is about 250 square feet. It barely removed any moisture. Walls and windows get wet. Humidity in camper sits around 46 - 50% and still barely anything is in the cannister. I've checked the filter and made sure nothing was clogged. Just doesn't work, ended up throwing the dang thing away and will buy a different one.

Updated: It works for small spaces/apartmemt
So I got this little machine a few weeks ago and it's working great. I live in a 600sq ft apartment (with one bedroom) and I can definitely say it's working, I was so surprised at home much it collects from the air. Sometimes I've left this thing run for 8 hours straight and it collects about inch height of water. I move it around to the kitchen when I'm cooking and the bathroom when I'm going to take a shower, and in the bedroom sometimes when we go to sleep. I don't really like in in the bedroom though when we're sleeping because the next morning me and my husband wake up with a dry throat, my hubby said he woke up with a dry tongue (I don't really know if it's the machine that's causing it or allergies) so we leave it out most times from the bedroom. It's cord isn't very long so that's another reason why I have to move it around and arrange it to stand close to where I need it. My apartment building has a problem with mold so that's why we bought this little guy. So far I'm happy. I'm buying an air purifier though because I think that will help more get rid of cooking smell that's left over, we have a small place and the kitchen is open to the living room. I'll try to update in a few months. Also the noise is not a problem for us, we almost don't even notice but then again we live on a busy street so we might just be use to it.It would have 5 starts if the cord was longer.Update: 12/2018So we've had this thing for almost a year and it's still running like the first day we got! So happy with it and I might buy another for my living room next to the front door. Right now it's winter in Seattle and with the heat turned up there's a lot of condonation on the door. We live in building where there's a mold problem, but thank goodness to this little guy we haven't had an issues.

Still works great after 5 years.
This little dehumidifier has been working 24/7 under the cover of my boat, stored outdoors for over 5 years. It’s still running like new. Awesome!
