I was originally looking for a bokken. A real made of wood bokken. But I couldn’t really find one for a reasonable price that didn’t look cheap and fragile. I had gotten someone a gift similar to this item in the past more as a joke but something that he would think was cool, but that one had a very coarse handle and the “wrap” stuck out and made it feel bulky. The coarseness and places that stuck out also rubbed some serious blisters making training with it fairly difficult, so for me and wanting something to train with I went with this one because based on the pictures it looked like it would be less brutal on the hands. And I was right this one is more smooth but still tacky enough to get a good grip. I also like that the tsuba kinda “snaps” into place instead of how the other had a rubber piece that you had to work really hard to get it snug and even then would slip some after use. Overall I think it’s a nice training katana, but I wouldn’t trust a kid with this as a toy as it does have some weight and sturdiness to it that could really do some damage if not careful.
