It plays for 8 hours or as long as it has a charge. It does not have auto off .

What sounds come preloaded ? THis can't be set to turn off? \

it has white noise (sounds like a continuous waterfall), ocean surf, thunder and rain, steady rain, rocky mountain stream, gentle surf, summer night, brown noise (just another type of white noise), woodlands, heartbeat. it doesn't have a feature to be programmed to turn off by itself. if you have it going for close to 8 hrs, it will switch itself to the next noise choice.

Can you plug the USB cord into a plug adaptor so you can charge off an electrical outlet vs. a computer?

Yes you can. We use one from our phones.
