A good kitchen addition
Good knives deserve a good cutting surface and vice-versa. The more time you spend in the kitchen, the more you appreciate good tools…and good infrastructure. Other than stove, refrigerator, counter space, sinks, there’s nothing that makes as big a difference as a good cutting board. This is a good well-priced option: solid construction, juice gutters to collect wets, good looks.Rating: 4 (see below for qualification)The general trade-off of bamboo v acacia wood is expense (bamboo less), long-term durability (acacia better) and maintenance (bamboo more for comparable service life). This review is based on the following assumptions:> You don’t have a fixed opinion on cutting boards.> Don’t cook constantly or semi-professionally.> Money matters more than performance to start.> You’re good trading time investment for monetary expenditure. That said, my judgement is this is a good starter which may be the only one you need to make. If you get to the point you notice any deficits in bamboo performance, then be happy upscaling your cutting board…maybe even to a butcher-block-style cutting surface—which this is not. The sunk cost has been worth it.To be clear:> Cutting board, regardless of material - less weighty, easier to move around, needs more-frequent maintenance, Less commitment.> Butcher block - thicker, heavier, really substantial, self-maintaining—you can pass it on as part of your estate. You are seriously committed to food prep.PROAffordableWell-constructedOrganic renewable bambooLight and easy to move around and storeCONTakes some maintenance to stay useful (get the recommended mineral oil when you purchase)Doesn’t have non-slid feet - lightness lets it slide around on the counter-top (closer to a 5 if there were feet)One more thing: I’d recommend you pop for a decent plastic cutting board as well. Cutting meat—especially poultry—on a wood surface invites bacterial spread. So regardless of the basic cutting surface I use a plastic (i.e., non-permeable) surface for cutting raw and resting cooked animal protein. Belt-and-suspenders, maybe, but it gives me a bases-covered feeling.“Allez cuisine!”

Bamboo As Hard as Maple Great Cutting Board
I am ditching my cut-up man-made-material cutting boards and replacing them with these bamboo ones. It is very hard to make a deep scratch or groove in them. This is so heavy and dense and nicely made, it even came pre-oiled with what smelled like regular old cutting board oil. If you read up on bamboo's use in manufacturing you find it's a readily renewable natural resource so to the benefit of forestry I guess. This medium board is the perfect size for some quick prep and cleanup in the sink. Seems totally worth 10 bucks. The plastic or melamine one is now in the trash! Hope this review was helpful.
