G-Technology 8TB G-Drive USB-C (USB 3.1 Gen 1) Desktop External Hard Drive – 0G05674-1

I own six G-Drives of various Capacity. They are solid, rugged, and reliable. This 8TB Drive is super fast with Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) and will hold my Sound FX Library and all the Shows I'm working on currently. It is a very good value for the price.

I purchased four of these units. Two for my iMac Time Machine and Two for my photo and video files. The first three were great and have worked well for a month or more. The two for the Time Machine were fine and have been working steadily day and night. The third unit for photos also worked well and has. The fourth unit worked fine for 24-48 hours and then I started getting error messages. I tried to reformat the drive, etc. Nope I couldn't do anything with it and I contacted Amazon for a replacement. The new one came in, I unpacked it, took the 10-12 hours to copy over all the photos and videos...no problem. 36-48 hours later, I got an error message that the hard drive had an issue, etc. (can't remember the error message). Next the computer didn't recognize the drive, nothing seemed to work, I couldn't put files on it or take them off, etc. I contacted Amazon for a replacement. The second replacement came in. (I now have two back in the box to send back to Amazon by UPS). I copied over my material, set everything up and all was right in the world for a few days. Nope...another error message. I tried everything again to erase, reformat, error map, etc. Nothing worked. I called Amazon and I'll be returning this one as well. I have one portable and three desk 8TB G-Drives. All are fine. I also have three that quit working within 2-3 days...they're going back. I'm not planning on repeating the process again. I wanted G-Drives and they match my other gear, but it's a bridge too far and I'm shopping for something else.

wouldn't respond after 10 months. Probably still under warranty but I have faaaaar too much personal information on it (SSN's, important documents etc.,) not work the anxiety of shipping this thing off and having god know's who looking through it. Fortunately I 'always' have two external HD's running, one backs the other up just in case of well, this.

this is a good option for apple iMac computer external storage. It provides a good value per gigabyte of storage. If I had to buy it again I would purchase the FireWire addition that has a much faster interface to the computer. This has the USP 3 interface that works almost as well.

G-Drive is great! I use it on daily basis with tons of video editing projects and backing up!I usually keep my mac plugged to the power! yesterday I decided to clean my desk and forgot to put back my mac charger and I noticed that my macbook still charging! I thought that the mac is tripped or something until I figured out that it can also charge your macbook with the USB-C cable. That is AMAZING!

I have this drive on my desktop and I was impressed with how quiet it was. Now, about 9 months later, the drive is vibrating but at a very low period of loud-silent-loud-silent-ToInfinity oscillation twice a minute. It starts out silent then gradually gets louder and louder, peaks then starts to get quiet again until silent. Rince, repeat. I think I have other bare-bones WD drives that are doing the same thing. It definitely makes me insane especially when you have a bunch of similar drives doing the same thing and peaking and cancelling each other out. In my office, it sounds like something is moving around the room due to phase and amplitude shifts.

This unit is faster than my other units (I have 3 LaCie 8TB Porsche Design 8TB, and two Seagate portable external drives). It is quiet and backed up over 4 TB seamlessly from a MacBook Pro with and another 8TB external drive. Relatively compact. I don't like the "G" light on the front of the unit, so I put a sticker on it. Very happy with the unit.

I purchased this drive at the end of February 2019, and throughout my use of it, I've been extremely cautious in handling and transporting it. I only use the drive for archiving purposes so it is not in constant use and I've only travelled with it on 2 occasions, both times taking extra care to ensure it is not mishandled. After not using the drive for a couple of months, I'm now trying to use it and it won't even boot/mount. There is absolutely no sound coming from the enclosure which could only mean that it is a hard drive failure... please correct me if I'm wrong.I'm extremely disappointed by the lack of durability/reliability for such a reputable, high-end drive. I would not recommend buying these drives to anyone.
