The Critical Thinking Editor In Chief Level 1 School Workbook

The Editor-in-Chief lessons and exercises have proven effective for helping my son take his “workbook knowledge” and apply it to paragraphs like he might write himself. Of course, he works on editing his own paragraphs and essays too, but kids have a hard time seeing, let alone correcting their own mistakes. It’s so personal when it’s something he’s written himself. And he is usually too mentally and physically tired after writing to want to bother ever looking at his writing again to correct it. Editor-in Chief removes all of those blocks by presenting already written paragraphs and all my son has to do is find the mistakes. It even tells him how many mistakes to look for in each page and gives him a way to keep track so he doesn’t get frustrated by me telling him to keep looking. The method makes the exercise more independent. Also, the book gives a mini lesson on the grammar skills being worked on in the following several lessons. I go over this with my son first and over the next couple of days have him edit one paragraph per day. I leave the next two paragraphs in that grammar lesson for the future- to circle back so he can review. Finally, I prefer this over traditional grammar workbooks because my son does great in workbooks, but has more difficulty applying the skills he learns in workbooks. We go over this eternally- that his acquired knowledge does no good on the little lines in a workbook. Knowledge is meant to be applied. So, until his writing matures and he’s able to see his own mistakes, this is a great way for him to learn to spot mistakes.

I used this to help my students with their writing and comprehension

Excellent resource for teaching editing skills in students. The focus is on actually using rules of grammar (capitalization, punctuation, spelling, etc) to edit various pieces of writing. I wish the book was thicker and provided greater practice but it's representative of the skills students need to learn. I love using this book with my homeschooled son.

Finally a grammar book my Grade 6 son wants to do! Love how it tells you how many errors you need to find. Very child friendly.

Students find others errors easier than their own. As they become more skilled they will be able to edit their own work accurately.

This is a great way to help kids really hone their grammatical skills.
