It's been more than 20 years since "Saturday Night Fever," the record AND the movie, took the pop world by storm. Movie and record producers have been trying ever since to produce as successful a soundtrack for a film, and they've yet to do it. Beyond the whopping 7 #1 pop hits that grace the album, I think its success owes to the times in which its was released. And how well an album like this fit those times. The year was 1978. I was a senior in high school. This was before the era of the music video. To a teenager, much of what went on at a night club was a mystery. Okay, you knew people drank and danced there, and you at least suspected that sex played some kind of role. But what did going out night after night really mean, to those who chose to do it? The movie SNF asked (and answered) that question, and did so in a style that made a discotheque seem like the most exciting place one could go on this earth. And the soundtrack more than fit the bill: It was much more successful, from both a critical and a commercial standpoint, than was the movie. Besides those chart-toppers, it contains memorable tracks like "More Than A Woman," "Calypso Breakdown," "Salsation," "K-Gee," and "Disco Inferno." Listen to the entire album, and what strikes you is how soulful the conglomeration of sounds is. "Saturday Night Fever" was a never-to- be-repeated phenomenon. It is the definitive record of the explosion that took over Pop culture, that has come to be known as Disco. Disco lives on today under different names like Club, House, Trance, Rave, and others. As such, it is fragmented, and not nearly as powerful. Such was not the case in 1978. This soundtrack obliterated everything in its path and changed Pop music for good.

How do you go wrong with this soundtrack? If you do you're wrong.

I remember several years ago in the early 90's I made a series of mix tapes for a New Year's party that we were throwing. I had all sorts of music on the tapes, from Van Morrison, to Madonna, to The Rolling Stones. I included a couple songs from my LP copy of Saturday Night Fever, and my partner said, with great disgust in her voice, "That's so stupid, no one wants to hear that!" But she was wrong. When those songs came on at the party everyone got up and danced, with big grins on their faces. I'm a lazy person, so don't listen to LP's anymore. I like being able to toss several discs in the player and then not have to fuzt with it again for several hours. Or making playlists on my computer so I can listen to exactly the songs I want to listen to when I want to listen to them. I was listening to the radio in the car recently and "More Than a Woman" came on and I got a big grin on my face as I listened to it. And I realized I did that any time I hear music from Saturday Night Fever, which isn't too often these days. So feeling a bit nostalgic, I decided that despite the fact that disco is long dead, that even though there's a stigma attached to anything disco related (it's just not cool), and wasn't a form of music that I was particularly into in the first place, that I would finally get a CD copy of the soundtrack. As another reviewer said, the music from Saturday Night Fever is very dated, in that when you hear it, you know it could only come from that specific period in time. There's no mistaking it for music from any other decade. Yet despite that, I feel many of the songs from the soundtrack have a timeless quality to them. Maybe because they're some of the music from the life soundtrack of my teen years. I just know that the grins mean something, and it's a good thing. So if you are sneaking in here, pondering the possibility of getting a copy of the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack for yourself, but are nervous about what others might think, just do like the rest of us. Get yourself a copy, don't tell anyone (put on some headphones if needed), listen to the music, and get a big grin on your face. You won't be sorry. I'm not.

Good movie …

I'm old school. This era is when music was really music. I love the Bee Gees. I still have the album (from the 70's), and I've had several of the cd's, and they have been lost or scratched. I put this in the vehicle (yes, mine still has a CD player) and jam on the way home from work! I loved the movie too....wish I could go back to the 70's....

Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. Contains stayin' alive by Bee Gees and disco inferno by Trammps, if I can't have you by Yvonne Elliman. Great music, makes me dance at home.

Der Disko Sound schlecht hin.Die Songs habe ich damals rauf und runter gehört.Auch heute noch höre ich die Bee Gees sehr gerne und erinner mich an die gute alte Zeit zurück.Schade das sie vorbei ist.Den Soundtrack kann ich nur empfehlen und würde ihn sofort wieder kaufen.
