Absolutely. Carbon is really only necessary to remove meds.

how do you clean the t-bar part of the intake filter?. nothing i've tried will reach it and clean it.

I use a combination of pipe cleaners and flexible nylon tube brushes (also sold on Amazon pretty cheap) to get into that bend. Some scrubbing with the brushes along with vigorous shaking of the intake tube has worked well to dislodge any gunk and get it clean. I agree, it's a pain to clean the intake, though it's definitely do-able. FWIW, I'd be reluctant to use bleach, better safe than sorry.

Does this filter come with a prefilter sponge that goes over the intake tube to prevent small fish/shrimp from being sucked into the filter?

Well, it does have a prefilter sponge, but it is in the reservoir that the pump sends water to be filtered and back to the tank. (right side of the picture).Nemo couldn't get sucked up the intake, but a small shrimp could. The tube diameter is big enough for a pencil to stick up into, but small enough that a Sharpie couldn't.Hope that helps.
