The Parakeet Handbook (Barron's Pet Handbooks) Review: But after reading it I did end up getting a second parakeet and am so glad I did - Oops! I actually posted my review under the wrong title. THIS is the book that you should read and keep on hand as a resource after. But after reading it I did end up getting a second parakeet and am so glad I did. I had my first parakeet for six weeks and after bringing home a second bird she was instantly more active and playful and seemed more comfortable with a bigger "flock" for security. This author didn't seem to think keeping two females together was an issue as long as they weren't cramped for space and my two females are getting along fine with no aggression issues. After seeing the difference I will never keep a single bird again. The level of interaction and attention they give each other would be impossible to match -- and I am home all day. They are so interesting together and this book was adult level helpful. Review: Very informative book - This is a very detailed book on budgies. The book goes into detail about purchasing your first parakeet, to housing needs and accessories, budgie care and feeding, illnesses, care and grooming, feeding and treats, health, breeding, and understanding your parakeet's behavior. It has eight chapters with 151 pages. Very nice pictures. It discusses everything in full detail. The book even has a chapter devoted to the wild ancestors of our beloved pet budgies. Even after having kept my budgies for years, I've learned lots of new and useful information from this book. It's a must-have for every budgie owners bookshelf. Like many other pet books, author opinion plays a large part in this one as well. Great resource, but again, don't rely solely on just this book. Add variety to your bookshelf, your budgie will appreciate it!

This book saved my 3 new parakeets' lives
After losing all 5 of our beautiful parakeets within 2-1/2 hours to fumes from an overheated teflon oven liner, we grieved hard and decided to try again. We bought 3 beautiful baby 'keets from a pet store and got them home within 20 minutes in our warm car. But all 3 birds were sick as they could be the following morning. I got out The Parakeet Handbook and rushed to buy an ultraviolet lightbulb and used table lamp, which we placed next to the cage and used without a lampshade for three, one-hour periods within each of the following five days. Even Lucky, who was in such bad shape she could barely stand on a perch, is now happy and healthy just a week later. I even noticed for the first time today that the book warns about teflon kitchen utensils as a poison for pet birds, though it doesn't talk about fumes from overheating as the issue. My vet said fumes from teflon kitchen pans are the #1 killer of pet birds in cages near home kitchens. I just can't say enough good things about this book. The other book we just received that is delightful and highly recommended is also published by Barron's, and is titled Games and House Design for Parakeets.

Good Health/Safety Information
I recently acquired three budgies. So, as I gobble up as much information as I can about them via internet and books, I feel that this book is a definate keeper. It is more elaborate than most on issues of health and safety. I love that it pushes, to considerable extent, the need for budgies to be kept in multitudes (2 or more - same sex ok). What bothers me about this book is that one of the two authors as I understand it, Immanuel Birmelin, is also the original author (in German) of another Barron's budgie book under a different (American tranlation author?) name- Hildegard Niemann, each of which is in conflict with the other on certain key areas of budgie ownership. I have both and both books are good to have. This one, so far that I've found, is a better resource for health issues. The other seems rooted in more common sense in general care. The other books I've so far seen/read I am re-selling. They are too basic - too much like a care pamphlet one would pick up for free next to the bird display at a major pet store chain. Or geared to the young reader/pet owner.

A Best seller "Barons" This is my second one so far the best.
I loved this book. " The Parakeet Handbook by Baron's. " My first one by Baron " Games and House Design also by Baron was good but the latest one The Parakeet Handbook was better. But very happy with both. I learned more from the Handbook but Games & House design was good also. This Handbook gets into more about actually raising a Parakeet. Would recommand it .

Very informative!
I learned so much about the parakeets from this book, a lot more than from a google search too! I refer back to it often. If you have or are thinking about getting a parakeet, you need this book!

Adequate
Adequate info and interesting history. Perhaps a bit too preachy for us. Church lady of the budgie kingdom alert! Words toward dissatisfaction with budgie owner issues might have been spent on additional info. This book is helpful but not exhaustive on tips and advice. Lots of pages dedicated to budgie family expansion. Also good idea to address the belief of differing minds on some of the topics. Listen, I’m disgusted by the whole breeding scheme and how cruel pet stores treat these amazing blessings too. I just didn’t find the tone of the book helpful to that problem.

Um livro de linguagem simples, porém meticuloso e bem detalhado sobre o básico da criação de periquitos australianos. Parabéns aos autores que compilaram e escreveram um ótimo livro.
